Across the Board – October 17, 2016

Vox Aurea, the Heritage Middle School choir, under the direction of Lisa Benton entertained the School Board prior to its regular meeting October 17, 2016.

During the meeting, two students who brought national recognition to Williamson County Schools were honored. McKenna Martin, Franklin High, won a National Student Production Award for Writing. Her teacher is Keri Thompson. Mitch Mullins, Ravenwood High, won for Animation/Graphics /Special Effects. His teacher is Shane Shoemake.

The number of students earning a perfect score on the ACT continues to grow. Brentwood High’s Alexander Qin is the latest student to earn the honor.

In athletics, Brentwood High’s Trenton Johnson was honored for winning the TSSAA Class AAA State Boys Individual Golf Championship. His coach is Bud Robison.

Fairview Middle students William Perry, Mason Dowdy, Jose Perez, Ryan Keeton, Matthew Andrea, Rylan Skelton and Marco Pukl won the TMSAA State Boys Cross Country Championship. Their coaches are Preston Brooks and Ally Lary.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney asked Board members to check their calendars so a date for a Board retreat could be set. He also provided an update on enrollment.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Anderson announced that Page High senior Hunter Spivey was honored as the 2016 Mid-Cumberland District winner of the Student Recognition Award by the Tennessee School Boards Association.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved two policies on first reading, Credit Requirements for Graduation and The Study of Religious Holidays.
  • Did not approve three policies on first reading including Homework, Student Religious Liberties and Employee Religious Liberties.
  • Tabled the policy, Complaints and Grievances.
  • Approved a 2016-17 General Purpose School Fund Resolution for $63,608 for two additional positions in transportation and planning.
  • Approved two 2016-17 Education Capital Projects Fund Amendments, one for beginning the master plan process at Page High School and one for next steps in the master plan at Brentwood High School.
  • Approved a 2016-17 General Purpose School Fund Amendment for a $75,000 LEAP grant for Centennial High.
  • Approved a 2016-17 Extended School Program Fund Amendment for $1,312,185 for four new elementary sites and four new middle school sites.
  • Approved an adjustment to bus driver pay to help in the district’s recruitment efforts.
  • Approved the School Board Code of Ethics.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading including Regular Meetings and Board Meeting Preparation and School Attendance Areas, Zoning and Nonresident Students.
  • Approved an editorial change to the Bullying policy.
  • Approved Sick Leave Bank Trustees. Board members Robert Hullett and Dr. Beth Burgos will serve.
  • Approved the CTE Textbook Adoption Committee.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, November 21, 2016, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
