Across the Board – November 21, 2016

Newly appointed District 12 School Board member Nancy Garrett was sworn in by Judge Sharon Guffey prior to the start of the November 21, 2016, meeting of the Williamson County School Board.

During the meeting, two students were honored for earning a perfect ACT score including Joseph Gripenstraw, Brentwood and Theodore Grosson, Ravenwood.

In athletics, several state championship teams were celebrated along with Brentwood’s Tucker Day who was selected to the U.S. Army All American Bowl team.

In cross country, Brentwood High’s Brodey Hasty won the TSSAA Class AAA 2016 Boys Individual Cross Country State Championship, and the team consisting of Hasty, Taylor Vroon, Jackson Vroon, Scott Thompson, Ryann Bashir, Quinn Heithcock and Andrew Cate won the TSSAA Class AAA 2016 Boys Cross Country State Championship. Their coach is Billy Anderson.

Ravenwood High won the TSSAA Class AAA 2016 Girls Cross Country State Championship. Team members are Annika Sleenhof, Ella Kuban, Jamie Blaylock, Alex Rosen, Maeve Hanley, Olivis Derr and Elise Strevell. Peter Mueller is their coach.

Brentwood Middle won the TSMAA 2016 Tennessee State Middle School Cross Country Championship. The team members are Sofia Rutherford, Anna Banovac, Eden Mittelsdorf, Kaitlyn Vanderkolk, Carissa Shuxteau, Bronwyn Harris, Ava Doyle and Cari Pautienus. Their coaches are Nathan Cummings, Alexis Temple, Rebecca Singer and Angie McKee.

Centennial High was honored for winning the 2016 TSSAA Large Varsity Cheerleader State Championship. Team members include Avery Anderson, Ally Beard, Emma Kate Best, Millie Busing, Caroline Calabrace, Katelyn Denno, Audrey Eisner, Elli Helmintoller, Ali Hudson, Abbey Jordan, Preslie Kelly, Maddie Lawrence, Shelby Mathews, Gracie McCloud, Faith Parks, Cassetty Parrish, Lauren Robison, Lily Sackleh, Lily Shelton, Ashton Smith and Lauren Wilkinson. Their coach is Melissa Bull.

Ravenwood High also won the TSSAA Medium Varsity Cheerleader State Championship. Team members include Olivia Corley, Ashton Carteaux, Sydney Dagostino, Avery Fallon, Sydney Fordice, Aerial Griffin, Bri Fick, Ally Hankins, Sidney Holley, Morgan Lanius, Peyton Rositano, Logan Jordan, Reghan Jordan, Bailey Martin, Lauren Martin, Greta Petterson and Brooke Phillips. Their coach is Barbee Morgan, and Stephanie Dykes is the staff sponsor.

Also from Ravenwood Hayley Diggs, Johnna Jones, Katie Kmiecik, Savannah Micillo, Kiana Shahosseini, Reagan Woosley, Peyton King, Sara Smith, Taylor Boyd, Kimberly Buonaiuo, Taylor Layland, Caroline Kmiecik, Kendall Mitchell, Summer Smith and Eleanor Tisano won the TSSAA Medium Jazz Varsity State Championship. Their coach is Haley Hampton Beeler.

Brentwood High brought home another TSSAA 2016 Volleyball State Championship. Team members include Georgia Cotton, Megan Jantzi, Andrea Aceveda, Keely Kaufman, Aubry Jantzi, Grace Gibbs, Celia Lamb, Kamryn Carter, Bella Blanchet, Tori Carpenter, Garrett Joiner, Kaylee Seidel, Sydney Rexford, Aspen Martin, Analeigh Wingo, Elly Hensley, Sarah Howard and Logan Eggleston. Barbara Campbell is the head coach, and Angie Noble and Cathy Cram are the assistant coaches.

In the arts, the Franklin High Marching Band won the Contest of Champions Grand Championship. Their director is David Aydelott.

Several students were selected for the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association All State Choir including Brentwood High’s Georgia Winkler and Grace Choi. Their teacher is Natalie Pratt. Centennial High’s Leeza Cox, Caila Murphy and McKenzie Garey were also named to the choir. Their teacher is Jonathan Vest. Franklin High’s Leo Culligan, Abby Newman and Isabella Starchurski earned All State honors. Their teacher is Angela Beale. Independence High’s Sofia Kimball, Nina Green, Sophie Boykin, Drake Cunningham, Isaac Thompson, Brett Lemmers and Journey Thouin earned top honors. Sydney Shadrix is their teacher. Ravenwood’s Lauren Case, Claire Sudarshan, Sandra Zaki, William Exler, Tristan Tournaud, Haiz Webb and Nathan Keffer are All State members. Their teacher is Lauren Ramey. Summit’s Allie Smith, Katelyn Greenman, Cassie Henriksen, Anna-Caroline Barbee, Daniel Meese, Eric Whitlock and Nathan Willis earned top honors as well. Jenna Elsberry is their teacher.

In staff spotlights Spring Station Middle’s Darnell Spann was named the Tennessee Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance 2016 Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and Brentwood High’s Doug Anderson received the National Association of Biology Teachers Educator of the Year award.

The Executive Committee pulled the 2017-18 calendar off the meeting agenda until January. In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney explained that additional discussion needed to take place before a vote on the calendar should take place. He added that Board policy required the calendar be adopted by March 1. He also recognized District Office Manager Connie Jones who is retiring at the end of November and thanked her for her 41 years of service to the district.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Anderson reminded the group of its Board retreat on December 7. He also encouraged members to attend some of the almost 80 school performances that will be held in the next month.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved two policies on first reading including Semester and Final Examinations and Middle School Examinations.
  • Approved eight 2016-17 Intent to Fund budget resolutions including: $46,125,000 for Land for Future School Sites (Plan A); $45,880,000 for Design, Development and Construction for New North Elementary and Middle Schools; $4,900,000 for Design and Initial Site Work for Central High, Middle and Elementary Schools; $9,000,000 for Design, Improvements and New Construction at Franklin High School’s Columbia State Campus and Athletic Facilities; $17,200,000 for Design, Improvements and New Construction at Brentwood High and Middle Schools; $6,300,000 for Design and New Construction at College Grove Elementary and Scales Elementary Schools; $6,800,000 for Completion of the Final Phase for Construction of Middle School Auditoriums; and $2,800,000 for 2016-2017 Major Asphalt and Roofing Capital Needs.
  • Approved two 2016-17 budget amendments include a $7,500 donation from the Education Foundation for devices for students and a 2016-17 Central Cafeteria Fund Amendment to purchase cafeteria equipment.
  • Approved the Five Year Capital Outlay Plan for 2016-22.
  • Approved the Superintendent Evaluation Instrument.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading, Credit Requirements for Graduation and The Study of Religious Holidays.
  • Approved the 2016 LEA Compliance Report.
  • Approved the 2017 Carl Perkins CTE Incentive Grant.
  • The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, January 17, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
