Across the Board – June 19, 2017

Four Williamson County Schools students were honored for earning a perfect ACT composite score at the June 19, 2017, Williamson County Board of Education meeting. Brentwood High’s Brandon Huynh and Coby Warkentin; Independence High’s Maxwell Coil and Ravenwood High’s Clara Miller earned the 36 on the test administered in April.

Franklin High’s Priscilla Kirkpatrick was honored for being elected the Governor of Volunteer Girls State.

In athletics, Williamson County Schools had thirteen first place state championships during spring fling. Brentwood High won a State Championship in Boys Baseball Class AAA. Bill Moore is the coach.

Also from Brentwood High, Sam Fischer won the State Championship in Boys Tennis Singles Class AAA; Somer Henry won in Girls Tennis Singles Class AAA; Evie Calhoun and Georgia Fischer won in Girls Tennis Doubles Class AAA; and Brentwood High won the Girls Tennis Team State Championship in Class AAA. Their coach is Bill Jayne.

Page High’s Sarah Brackin won the State Championship Girls Tennis Singles Class A-AA. Her coach is Eric Barnes. Donald Johnson also from Page won the State Championship Boys Track and Field Discus Throw, Class A-AA. His coaches are Carrie Vitucci and Gary Maddox .

Brentwood’s Katherine Coffey won two State Championships in Girls Track and Field for Shot Put and Discus Throw, Class AAA. Her coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.

Addi Coggins from Independence won the State Championship Girls Track and Field 1600 Meter Run, Class AAA. Her coach is Jaron Byrum .

Mary Leichner from Page won the State Championship Girls Track and Field Pole Vault, Class A-AA. Her coaches are Carrie Vitucci and Gary Maddox.

Ravenwood’s Riley White won the State Championship Girls Track and Field 400 Meter Dash, Class AAA and Kiara Carter, Caroline Groves, Maeve Hanley and Riley White won the State Championship Girls Track and Field 4×400 Meter Relay, Class AAA. Pete Mueller is the head coach and the assistant coaches are Ryan Fowler, John Hardaway, Joel Love, Joan Obot, Ricky Sierra.

Logan Parsons from Fairview Middle won the Tennessee Middle School Athletics Association State Track and Field Meet 400 Meter Run. His coach is Preston Brooks.

Brentwood Middle Gitanjali Rao was awarded the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Aeronautics Division Aviation Tennessee Art Contest.

In staff spotlights, Summit High’s Deborah Bohn was selected as a National Education Association Foundation Global Learning Fellow, and the Communications Department was awarded the National School Public Relations Association Golden Achievement Award for Be a Friend, Step In, a series of public service announcements created in conjunction with BE NICE and the Bullying Prevention Advisory Council.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney told the group that construction projects across the district were moving along as planned.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson thanked everyone for a great school year and reminded the Board that the group will not meet in July and the next meeting will be in August.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved six budget amendments to the 2016-17 School Board budget.
  • Approved three resolutions for the 2017-18 School Board budget including a resolution for $1,657,397 from fund balance to fund a two percent raise for employees; a resolution for $6,090,000 for the Split Log Elementary School construction intent to fund; and a resolution to adjust the budget to $337,706,400.
  • Approved 2017-18 pay schedules.
  • Approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Brentwood.
  • Approved the authorization for an interlocal agreement with the City of Franklin for Henpeck sewer.
  • Approved the authorization to purchase land for sewer field lines to serve Page Middle and Page High.
  • Approved a memorandum of understanding with Williamson County Government for sales tax.
  • Approved a recommended additional school fee for 2017-18 so only field trips over $100 and/or overnight field trips must be approved by the Board.
  • Approved a Strategic Plan for 2017-2024.
  • Approved School Board meeting dates for 2017-18.
  • Approved five policies on first reading including Community Use of School Facilities, Athletic Facilities, Public Records Request, Sick Bank-Teacher and Tutoring for Pay.
  • Approved one policy for editorial change, Credit Requirements for Graduation.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading including Discipline Procedures for Classified Personnel and Student Clubs, Activities and Organizations.
  • Approved the PECCA Memorandum of Understanding
  • Approved Ravenwood High School girls’ locker room improvements.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, August 21, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
