The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Chick-fil-A and Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.
Fifth grader Leighton Hailey is the type of student who leads by example. Teachers at Winstead Elementary say Leighton is known for his ability to focus on his classwork and his generosity to others, making him a terrific choice for this year’s Academic All-Star award.
“Leighton is one of the most hardworking kids we’ve ever had in class,” said his teachers. “We can always count on him. He works incredibly hard, and that shines through in everything he does.”
As he finishes up fifth grade and prepares for middle school, Leighton says he’ll look back fondly on his experience at Winstead.
“There’s a lot of school spirit here,” said Leighton. “Everyone is always wearing T-shirts, and we get really loud at assemblies.”
Leighton’s favorite subject is math. Outside of school, he enjoys playing sports like soccer and football.
Although Leighton credits his mom for motivating him, his teachers say his ability to work hard and get along with everyone will serve him well as he makes the transition to middle school.
“Leighton can work with anybody in the classroom as a partner,” said his teachers. “He will help them with anything they need, and he always answers questions in the classroom. He is a great role model for others.”
