Academic All-Star – Scales Elementary

Published May 24, 2017

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, free food from Chick-fil-A and Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.

There’s nothing wrong with a little sibling rivalry. That’s according to Scales Elementary fifth grader Sasha Villaruz who says her older brother and sister motivate her to do well in school.

“I’m really competitive,” said Sasha. “Sometimes I compete against my siblings, and when I see them do well it pushes me harder.”

That competitive fire has not gone unnoticed by Sasha’s teachers who chose her as this year’s Academic All-Star.

“Sasha is a hard worker who always rises to the challenge to accomplish any task put before her,” said her teachers. “She has a zest for learning, along with a sunny disposition and an infectious smile.”

Although Sasha was new to Scales this year, she says her teachers helped her with the transition.

“The teachers here are really funny, and they always know how to make the lesson easier to understand,” said Sasha, who claims math and science are her two favorite subjects. “I don’t really know why I like math, but I enjoy solving the equations. I like science because it gives me more of a challenge. It’s kind of like a mystery.”

In her free time, Sasha enjoys spending time with friends and family and reading her favorite books: The Michael Vey Series.

“It’s about this teenage boy who has electric super power,” said Sasha. “He finds more people like him and then they try and stop the evil guys.”

In the fall, Sasha will move up to Brentwood Middle School where she and her older brother can continue their friendly rivalry. In the meantime, Sasha says she’s going to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with being named an Academic All-Star.

“It’s shocking, but I also feel very proud and happy.”
