In an effort to further shape healthy nutrition habits and lifestyle behaviors among Williamson County students, the district’s Food Services Department has added a new position to its staff.
Sarah Mitchell has been hired as the district’s registered dietitian. As part of her role, Mitchell will administer school nutrition programs, provide scientifically based nutrition expertise to schools and meet with student and parent groups to obtain feedback about the cafeteria.
“Sarah will be a great asset to our schools,” said WCS Food Services Director James Remete. “She has the expertise to assess the dietary and health needs of our students, promote nutrition through public speaking and keep up with the latest research in nutritional and food sciences. We’re so happy to have her on our team.”
Before joining WCS, Mitchell worked for three years as Sumner County Schools Wellness Coordinator. She also previously served as the Director of Dietary and Clinical Dietitian for Livingston Regional Hospital and Outpatient Clinical Dietitian at Methodist Le Bonheur Hospital.
Mitchell says her background has prepared her for this new role.
“Soon after beginning my career in clinical dietetics, I realized that my passions were pulling me to a more preventative role,” said Mitchell. “I want to help shape healthy nutrition habits and lifestyle behaviors early in life. School nutrition is an integral part of education, and I’m excited to utilize my dietetics background and serve the students of Williamson County.”
Mitchell received her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from Harding University and completed a Dietetic Internship at Vanderbilt University. She began her role with the district this summer.
