Student Leaders Meet with Dr. Looney

A select group of WCS students will have a unique opportunity to shape district initiatives.
As members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, the students will meet regularly with Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney to serve as advisers in his decision-making process.
“I want this council to serve as a sounding board for the decisions we make at the district level,” said Looney. “The students are essential in this process. They’re honest, and they share how our choices will affect them. The ultimate goal of the council is to make our schools and our district a better place for students to learn and grow into successful adults.”
The group held its first meeting of the school year October 7. Among the topics they discussed: adding a 30-minute block of time to the school day for a ‘Me Period’ that would give students a chance to practice the extracurricular activity of their choice.
The students who are serving on the council were chosen by their principals. While many are new to the council this year, they are excited about having a seat (and a voice) at the table.
“I’m looking forward to having my voice heard by Dr. Looney,” said Renaissance High sophomore Katherine Bolton. “I think it’s important to have students be heard, and I hope we can make a difference in the district this year.”
