Summit High

Summit’s National Art Honor Society had an onsite field trip this week and painted “en plein air” with artist Kim Barrick. Kim, the founder of the Chestnut Group, and an amazing nationally recognized artist, came and did a demo and taught the students the basics of plein air painting. Plein air painting is from the French phrase “en plein air” which basically means painting in the open – or outside. Because Summit is located on top of some beautiful rolling hills and farms with cows sprinkled throughout, we didn’t have to go far for some great views. The goal is to start and finish the painting quickly before the light changes. Usually the work ends up being more Impressionistic than realistic, but it was cloudy and the light was more constant so we were able to spend a little longer on our paintings. We used water based oil paints and for most students it was the first time painting with oil paints.
