Kindergarten students at College Grove set up amazing homemade Leprechaun traps in hopes of catching the mischievous little men on St. Patrick’s Day. Although the kindergartners were unsuccessful in their attempts, there was much excitement when the Leprechauns set off the traps and left green footprints around the classrooms.

Crockett Elementary

On Thursday, fourth grade students performed their musical Go West under the guidance of music teacher Wydell Croom. The performance was fabulous. Marilyn Switzer mesmerized the fourth graders of Edmondson Elementary when she shared stories about the Tenessee Native Americans and war heroes. Two of their favorite stories were about Nancy Ward becoming a Cherokee Beloved Woman and Davy Crockett fighting at the Alamo. The students will rejoin Mrs. Switzer on the Walking Tour of Nashville in three weeks.

Fairview Elementary

Fairview Elementary students were hard at work this week and last taking part one of the TNReady assessment. The students were so excited to “show what they know” and rock the test! They are excited for a well-deserved spring break next week as well. This week also saw the students celebrating Pi Day on March 14. Third, fourth and fifth graders completed pi activities which included measuring cookies of different sizes to find diameter and radius and seeing how many digits of pi they could memorize. One fifth grader knocked his teacher’s socks off by reciting 44 digits of pi.

Grassland Elementary

The fourth graders in Ms. Raney’s class are reading around the world – literally! They each have a passport book with the continents listed. They will be reading a specific genre and must find a book from that continent. For example, they need to find a mystery from or about Antarctica. Once they finish reading, they will write a short summary and draw a picture. The passport book, once finished, will be a literary tour of the world.

Walnut Grove Elementary

This week at Walnut Grove, second grade students learned about the three states of matter and their different aspects by rotating between their teachers. They took the information they learned and created PowerPoints in the computer lab. Students created five different slides on matter. For each slide they chose their font style, color and size and then learned how to insert bullet points and typed three facts about each form of matter. The students inserted online pictures into their slides and learned how to move and adjust the size of the pictures. Once the PowerPoints were completed, they presented them to their classmates.

Westwood Elementary

This has been a busy week for Westwood students. Third-fifth grade students started the week with TNReady testing in math and social studies. Fifth graders presented demonstration speeches during 4-H on Thursday. Fourth graders lit up model rooms using battery powered circuits. Third grade students analyzed data and represented it on pictographs. Second grade students began working on paper mache globes in art. First graders have been counting coin collections and learning about goods and services. Kindergarten students enjoyed sorting and graphing on St. Patrick’s day. After such a busy week, we will all enjoy a restful Spring Break!

Winstead Elementary

Winstead fourth grade students are preparing for the Wax Museum. Students have chosen a historical person to research. On Friday, March 18, parents, guests and other students will have an opportunity to visit the wax museum to see these historical figures in costume and hear about their lives. It’s a fun way for students to learn about history’s important people, while researching, writing and public speaking. Spring Break is March, 21-25. Have a safe and wonderful Spring Break!

Middle Schools

Grassland Middle

Graphic novelist Nathan Hale visited Grassland Middle School on March 11. Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales are well-researched events from American history presented in an entertaining format. The author had students learning and laughing about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Williamson County Schools has opened registration updates for returning students. The updates will take place online through existing Family Access accounts. Please contact Nancy Tate by email at nancy.tate@wcs.edu or by calling the office, if you have not requested a Family Access account.

Heritage Middle

The HMS Hornets Softball team is preparing for their first softball game of the season.

Spring Station Middle

Over the last six weeks, the eighth grade Spring Station language arts classes have explored the American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel is rich in many literary devices, such as figurative language, allusions, foreshadowing, and analogies, which have allowed us great, deep discussions of the novel as well as author’s craft. In addition, students have discussed the themes of courage, appearance versus reality, truth, and social justice. Our culminating activity was the annual Maycomb County Picnic, a highlight of the eighth grade year. On March 18, students dressed as characters from the novel while enjoying delicious food such as fried chicken, deviled eggs, potato salad, and sweet tea at an “old-fashioned” picnic. Bluegrass music added to the atmosphere as students gathered on blankets and quilts to share their meal together. It was a great celebration of all we’ve learned from Atticus, Scout, Tom, and Boo!

Sunset Middle

Over this nine weeks, seventh graders were able to choose a non-fiction book of their choice for their weekly book club discussions. In the end, students created a booth exhibit in which the classroom became a gallery for them to present on their books. Some students discussed items found in a character’s memory box, others created a life size timeline or a comic book. The producers of the group compiled a soundtrack to align with their book; including original songs they wrote! Some students even designed a yearbook or scrap book to capture the key elements of the book. The projects were creative and complex and a great way for students to communicate what they learned from their reading.

Woodland Middle

Last Friday, Ravenwood High School held a fencing tournament with teams competing from Ravenwood, Fairview, Frankllin High Schools and the Nashville Fencing Club including Woodland students Alexis Enderle and Jenny Hall (Team Captain). The competition was based on two mixed events: Foil and Epee. Against extremely tough competition Jenny came in second in the Foil event and Alexis came in second in the Epee event. This was a fantastic outcome as they were the only middle school students competing. In other news, the Woodland Middle Students of the Month for March Branden Davis, Judiah Scharia, Suzie McNeese, Gabe Hunziker, Jasper Vasilevskis, Madison Bidwell and Mithul Nallaka.
