Elementary Schools
Allendale Elementary
This week the third, fourth and fifth graders at Allendale Elementary will take on the daunting task of TNReady. TNReady is the tool by which educators, parents and students gauge their readiness for college or a career. The students at Allendale have been working hard all year in preparation for this up-coming event. Let’s remind students to get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast and try your best. Good luck Allendale Alligators, you will do great!
Bethesda Elementary
Bethesda Elementary’s third grade students are working on their reading skills. Students like the challenge of reading more difficult books. Reading everyday is a good habit to have, as it increases the student’s reading fluency and comprehension.
Clovercroft Elementary
Clovercroft Elementary fourth graders will present the musical, Go West! on March 17 at 6 p.m. Go West! combines music, history and drama to explore important facts about the westward expansion of the early United States and miners discover that real gold is not always the kind made into ingots and baubles. Also, kindergarten registration will take place March 29 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.; and again on March 30 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
College Grove Elementary
Our second graders have been studying map skills and land forms in Social Studies. They all made a Compass Rose to show the cardinal directions.
Crockett Elementary
This week began with the celebration of Principal Bohrer’s birthday. Students and staff dressed in all black, sang “Happy Birthday” and delivered birthday wishes. Students ended the week with TNReady testing. Testing will continue Monday and Tuesday of next week. March to Fitness Week will also take place next week from Monday, March 14, through Friday, March 18. The list of activities are as follows: Monday – walk to school, Tuesday – ride your bike to school, Wednesday – eat an apple, Thursday – eat a healthy snack, and Friday – family fitness. Also coming up next week is fourth grade’s musical performance of “Go West” which will take place Thursday at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.
Edmondson Elementary
During Read Across America week at Edmondson Elementary, kindergarten students were immersed in rhymes with Dr. Seuss. After reading his popular book Green Eggs and Ham, the students tried green eggs and ham at school. Most agreed they were delicious.
Fairview Elementary
After an exciting Read Across America week, fourth graders were busy giving 4H speeches. They have to give a demonstration speech that outlined how to do something that they enjoyed. They presented on topics ranging from how to build a birdhouse to how to plan a picnic and everything in between. You could really tell they had practiced! FES also had three Destination Imagination teams compete at the regional level on March 5. They all worked hard and one of our teams, Team Schmete, will go to compete at the state competition in April. Way to go, FES!
Grassland Elementary
The third grade held a Writing Boot Camp. The students dressed up in camouflage, boots and hats. Students were placed in troops and each troop was given a writing prompt from an assortment of articles. They worked as a team to develop a strong essay. Third graders also did a Star Wars theme math review, May the Facts be with You! Classes moved from room to room to review fractions, graphing, multiplication, perimeter and area.
Hunters Bend Elementary
Mr. Bond, the science guy, came to Hunters Bend Elementary recently where second graders learned about pulley systems.
Kenrose Elementary
Gymnastics is in full swing in Kenrose’s P.E. program. Fifth grader Charis Forte is showing an example of a gymnastics static, non-inverted and asymmetrical balance.
Longview Elementary
Mr. Ritchie, the Science Guy, visited second graders at Longview and explored simple machines with them. Students from Ms. Jewell’s class were able to race their simple machines as well as launch marshmallows with their homemade catapults.
Nolensville Elementary
Third graders had great fun rotating through different classes conducting a variety of chemistry experiments. Using the Scientific Method students, asked questions, did research, formed a hypothesis, made predictions, experimented and drew conclusions. The experiments kept students on the edge of their seats. They had a blast being scientists for the day.
Sunset Elementary
Principal Caldwell and Assistant Principal Serpas wanted to get the teachers excited about TNReady testing by going room to room and offering popcorn and drinks to the staff. The staff was so appreciative of this kind gesture and are ready to get things started!
Trinity Elementary
Trinity hosted its first Math Night on Tuesday, March 8. Families came together to enjoy math games and activities that were sports themed.
Walnut Grove Elementary
This week at Walnut Grove, first graders are studying ecosystems. They are making shadowboxes of a deciduous forest ecosystem. They are making a model to learn about specific parts of an ecosystem and the animal to plant relationship. This is important to animal and plant survival. To culminate their lessons this week Williamson County Recycles and Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation are sponsoring a program called TreeWise. An arborist and a recycling specialist will conduct an interactive presentation program that teaches first graders about trees and how they are important to the environment. At the end of the program each student will receive a tree seedling to plant at home.
Westwood Elementary
In PE, third, fourth and fifth graders are finishing up working on their Predator’s Challenge. Students who complete three miles of running, 100 sit-ups, 100 push-ups, stick-handling, dribbling, passing, shooting, game play and a nutrition sheet will earn a Predators bracelet with five charms. Many students are one charm away! In art, first grade is learning about Mexican folk art and finishing a mixed media sun project, second grade is starting self-portraits and third grade is completing pointillism fish. Kindergarten, first and second graders are also reading the current Volunteer State Book Award titles during library time. In April we will vote for our favorite. Third, fourth and fifth graders are reading independently from the Volunteer State Book award list. When a student has read three books from the list, he/she becomes a “secret agent” and can put a secret agent sticker on the display in the hallway. We will vote for our favorite in April.
Winstead Elementary
Winstead Elementary was busy last Friday night with 32 teams of moms and sons playing dodgeball. It was a fun night for everyone. In other news, Run Club started March 8 and will continue through May 5. Students and their parents meet on the track every Tuesday and Thursday before school at 7:45 a.m. Jump Rope Club will also meet at 7:45 a.m. on Fridays starting March 11 and running through May 6. Winstead’s Encore Summer Enrichment Camp will be July 18-22 – registration packets will be sent home soon.
Middle Schools
Grassland Middle
GMS students enjoy shopping during the Scholastic Feelin’ Groovy Book Fair, March 7-10. Peace, love and thanks for supporting the GMS Book Fair! The Frist Art Show is showcasing six GMS students! Come see a two week-long display of art from all Williamson County Schools. Show runs Saturday, February 27-March 13. The GMS artists are: Blake Dreier, Isa Lamar, Sydney Blankenship, Ali Herrmann, Sydney Harris and Jackson Model. Remember, WCS the Fine Arts Festival is on April 9 at The Factory in Franklin.
Heritage Middle
Shall We Hunt? The eighth graders answered yes as they became the predator of the Sitting Sticks – AKA toothpicks!
Sunset Middle
Congratulations to the Sunset Middle Battle of the Books team on their second place finish. Evan Hiatt, Joel Barnes, Ali Shoulders, William Fiechtl, Adam King and Madeleine McDaniel helped take their team to the final round of competition. Teams from all nine middle schools competed at Woodland Middle School on Tuesday, March 8. The event was co-sponsored by the Brentwood Public Library.
Woodland Middle
Congratulations to the Woodland Middle School Battle of the Books team for their first place victory in the tournament! Captain Alexis Enderle led the charge and the team of Regan Enderle, Karina Sheth, Hannah French, Gavin Blanchette and Kayla Jordan compiled their collective book genius to secure the win for Woodland. Thanks to Grace Woodside, Ana Antic, Ella Bullock-Papa, Sarah Phillippi, Jenny Douglas and Aria Beloate for all their help and support with the team. The team wa sponsored by Mrs. Lindsey Anderson. It was a great battle season!
High Schools
Brentwood High
Congratulations to the Film & TV Department students who won TSHPA awards at this year’s ceremony. Brentwood High is proud to present its spring production of Anything Goes this weekend. Show times are March 10, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. and and March 13 at 2 p.m.
Centennial High
CHS media students received numerous awards at this year’s Tennessee High School Press Association awards ceremony. Congratulations!
Franklin High
Job Dooley was awarded the 113 pound Middle Tennessee Dream Team Award last night at the Dream Team banquet in Nashville. He was the only freshman to receive this honor and only one of two Williamson County wrestlers to be awarded a spot on the Dream Team this year. In other news, the senior History of the Americas II classes will be hosting a World War I Exhibition on March 15 and 16. The event is free and open to the public at Franklin High from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibition involves a large number of authentic period artifacts, student-constructed art displays and student presentations on a variety of topics. And congratulations to Cadet Allison Segard! She won the statewide Outstanding JROTC Cadet Award from the Sons of the American Revolution. She will receive an award and $1000 at the state convention in April. Our drill team, color guard and fitness team al competed against 20 schools at a regional drill meet in McMinnville on March 5. The fitness team placed third out of 27 teams. The did five minutes of sit ups, kettle bell swing, lunges and burpees (continuous repetitions, one cadet at a time).
Page High
DECA Students attended the State DECA Competition this past weekend March 3-5. The students all performed incredibly well, and represented Page High with great professionalism. We had three Internationals Qualifiers and several who missed it by a fraction of a point. Students that made the stage and won high achievement awards in their categories are: Chloe Pigue – Restaurant Management, first place overall, and Internationals Qualifier/ Ally Vaughn and Abby Reed – Marketing Communications Team, Top five overall, and first alternate for Internationals/ Jacob Wilson and Gabby Sturdivant – Travel and Tourism Marketing Team, Top five overall, and Internationals Qualifier/ Dalton Fulmer Food Marketing, Top six overall, and second alternate for Internationals/ Jack Rossberger – Food Marketing, Top eight overall/ Sam Kraft – Principles of Marketing Job Interview, first place for interview, and first alternate for Internationals. Congratulations to each of these students and their teacher and mentor Mrs. Jackie Stevens and we wish them all the best at the International DECA Competition held April 23-27 at the Nashville Convention Center.
