The WCS Successory program gives students a chance to say thank you to a school employee who has made an extra effort to guide, encourage and support them to be successful in class. Fifth grade student Camryn Romagna nominated Mr. Heacock. She wrote about his math class, “Thank you for helping me understand math problems, because sometimes I don’t get it but you help.” A great teacher develops a student’s potential and sincerely cares about their learning. Congratulations Mr. Heacock!

After more than ten rounds, Sri Nemmani from the sixth grade was victorious! Second place also went to a sixth grade student Aashna Krishnaswamy. Congratulations to all who participated! Also this week, students in Mrs. Barber’s sixth grade Language Arts class participated in a philosophical debate. Students analyzed various informational texts, completed research, supported a claim with evidence and then debated the claim. The debates were wonderful. All teams showed great collaboration and it was evident students have made significant gains in their writing and speaking skills.
Spring Station Middle
Spring Station is excited to announce our latest Successory staff member. Seventh grader, Lily Gilbert, nominated Mrs. Judy Delbrueck, her language arts teacher. She wrote, “Thank you Mrs. Delbrueck for everything you have done for me. You’re a great teacher and you have always been there for me when I was having a bad day. You have helped me become better in language arts and you are the best teacher anyone could ever ask for! Thank you for everything that you have done for me!” Mrs. Delbrueck was so touched by this nomination from one of her current students. She was thrilled to receive the award and has Lily’s submission safely tucked away to keep and look back at in the future. Congratulations to Mrs. Delbrueck!
Sunset Middle
The students on the sixth grade navy team at Sunset Middle are reading the nonfictional, historical exemplar text, The Great Fire by Jim Murphy. This text chronicles the Chicago fire of 1871 that lasted for thirty-one hours and destroyed the city. We are creating charts to illustrate how the fires multiplied over the years with the increase in population, identifying mistakes that caused the fire to spread throughout the city and solutions that could have prevented the disastrous outcome. There will be a debate covering which mistake caused the most damage. The groups will need to research and defend their position with evidence. This has created conversations about their own family’s emergency plan. Many of the students realized that they needed to check that their windows opened and closed, safe escape paths and an alert system for their own family’s safety. Students on the sixth grade orange team are working diligently to prepare for the TN Ready Writing Assessment. The students have been writing their own prompts, analyzing anchor prompts and picking the best evidence to support their claims.
