Walnut Grove’s music program strives to teach our children rich and meaningful lessons. This week students are exploring sound and reinforcing science concepts. Our first graders are concentrating on pitch and register (high and low sounds), melodic direction (up/down), and identifying how notes move. They are singing songs with repeating pitches and learning how pitch can move by step, skipping or leaping. Students are playing Orff instruments to show how notes can do the same thing on the bars. They are learning how the size of an instrument or the size of a “bar” can affect its pitch (Large/Low; Small/High). Music training develops reasoning and creative thinking skills, increased coordination, and self confidence.
