Walnut Grove Elementary

Kindergartners at Walnut Grove celebrated the 100th day of school. The 100th day of school is a big deal in the eyes of a Kindergartner! More importantly, it is a fun, engaging and a hands-on way to teach various math and literacy concepts using the number 100. At morning meeting they talk about counting strategies: for example counting by ones, then grouping by fives and 10’s. This daily routine sets the foundation for learning place value. Literacy is great fun as well. Reading the book Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten helps students connect to characters, situations and settings that they themselves have experienced in Kindergarten. When making these connections students learn to think and act like good readers.

Each classroom had a different activity, children put 100 piece puzzles together, created a picture using the numbers 1, 0, and 0, drew a self-portrait of what they might look like at 100 years old, and created structures using 100 Legos. The students really enjoyed the learning activities and found time to see just how many things they could do in 100 seconds, like write their name, hop on one foot, sing the ABC’s and count!

Additionally, on January 17, Brandon Johns and Levi Hood traveled to Okeechobee, Florida to fish in the TBF Florida Open High School Tournament. The fishing conditions were tough with 50 MPH winds and they were restricted to just fishing the Kissimmee River that dumps into Lake Okeechobee. The tournament had 43 boats with High School Teams in them. Practice day was January 16 and the tournament was the 17. They caught three fish during practice but the conditions got tougher on tournament day. Brandon and Levi were able to catch one keeper that weighed 2lbs 15oz. which put them in 17 place for the tournament out of 43 boats. Very respectable considering they had never been on that lake or even fished in Florida before. Most of the teams were from Florida with a few from out of state. The two teams from Tennessee were Summit High School and Creekwood High School in Dickson county. The team from South Carolina won the tournament with a five fish limit weighing 26 lbs 8oz. The next closest team to them only had 10lbs 8oz. Summit Fishing is planning to open their season here in Tennessee by Fishing the Battle on Chick tournament March 11 and 12 on Lake Chickamauga out of the Dayton Boat Dock sponsored by Bass Pro Shops.
