Rumor Mill – October 9, 2015

Published October 9, 2015

The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.

If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.

Is it possible that our School Board will ever consider giving our students and teachers a full week off for fall break? If we can’t have a full week off for fall break and a full week off at Thanksgiving, then could we swap back and forth, year to year, taking a full week in October one year, with a shorter break during Thanksgiving week, then do the opposite the following year? Or is it even possible that we could have our two days off within the same week instead of Friday and Monday? It just seems that our fall break could use a little or a lot of adjusting.

The school calendar is decided annually by the School Board. Per Board Policy, a calendar committee made up of teachers and administrators makes a recommendation to the Board based on parameters given to the committee by the School Board.

In the past, a sampling of parameters might include keeping semesters as even as possible while having first semester exams prior to Winter Break; making sure that the last day of school falls before Memorial Day; or including a Fall Break of one or two days.

The committee should bring a recommendation to the Board for the 2016-17 school calendar at its November meeting.

You are always welcome to contact your School Board member on any topic. Board member contact information can be found at https://old.wcs.edu/school-board/board-members/.

Can you identify the schools (elementary, middle, and high) that students living in the Owl Creek Subdivision, Brentwood will attend for the 16-17 school year. We were told the neighbor would be split. If this is correct, where will the division occur?

The Owl Creek subdivision will be split. For the 2016 – 17 school year, the division line will follow Talmere Way into the subdivision, the sections to the right of the roundabout, following Cressy Ln will attend Sunset Elementary, Sunset Middle and Ravenwood High schools. Sections to the left of the roundabout following Glenmore Lane will attend Nolensville Elementary, Mill Creek Middle and Nolensville High schools.
