Rumor Mill – August 21, 2015
Published August 21, 2015
The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.
If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.
I have an 8th grader who will be accepted into the IB Program at Franklin High beginning 2016-17 school year but we are zoned for Independence High. We have another child who will be in sixth grade beginning that same school year. Will the younger child be eligible to attend Franklin High School as a freshman since the older child will be a senior at that time?
The younger sibling would be able to attend the out-of-zone school with the older sibling. According to School Board Policy 1.703 under Siblings, when a student is attending an out-of-zone school, that student and his/her siblings may attend through the highest grade level of that school, provided each newly enrolling sibling submits an out-of-zone request form by May 15.
A sibling may only apply to attend an out-of-zone school if there is a sibling currently attending that school who will be enrolled in the upcoming school year. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parent.

Several of my fellow Edmondson Elementary parents have discussed how we can bring a petition for uniforms to WCS. I am curious if this issue has been discussed before, and where I might start it getting this issue in front of key stakeholders and decision makers in WCS.
According to School Board Policy 6.310, “the Board of Education endorses the concept of a uniform dress code or uniforms to be adopted on an individual school basis.” You can read the entire Board Policy online at https://old.wcs.edu/wp-content/pdf/BoardPolicies/6310.pdf.
As with any school-related issue, we encourage you to contact your principal first. You may also contact your School Board representative.
I had been told that the re-zoning due to the new Nolensville High School would be finalized this August and effective next school year. Please update me on when the plan will be finalized and published as well as the effective date.
Nolensville High will open in August 2016 and serve students in grades 9-10. Zone lines for the new school have been established and can be viewed online at https://old.wcs.edu/wp-content/pdf/Transportation/HighSchoolsNE2016.pdf.
