Rumor Mill – August 14, 2015

Published August 14, 2015

The purpose of this section is to answer any questions parents, teachers or community members might have regarding the school district and to set the record straight in regards to any rumors that might be circulating.

If you have a question or have heard a rumor that you would like for us to address, simply SEND US your questions and we will respond to them in upcoming issues of InFocus. Below are some of the questions we have received since our last issue.

My seventh grader attends Sunset Middle School and I want him to go to Sunset next year as an eighth grader. I hear that he will be rezoned to the new Mill Creek Middle. Can you clarify that for me?

Mill Creek Middle will serve students in sixth through eighth grades next year; Nolensville High will open with ninth and tenth graders .

School Board Policy 1.703 states that students re-zoned due to the opening of a new school or the rezoning of an existing school may request and be grandfathered to continue in the former zoned school as follows: Elementary – rising fifth graders; Middle – rising eighth graders; High – rising eleventh and twelfth graders. The out of zone forms will be released in March 2016 with a due date of May 15, 2016. Parents are responsible for transportation to the out-of-zone school.

Why are students that live out of zone still allowed to attend Oak View Elementary School? There are several families who once lived in the OVES zone, but have moved out of the zone and were granted some type of waiver to allow them to continue to attend. With the recent growth, the addition of portables and the loss of the workroom, it would seem the district could make these students attend their correct zones to alleviate some of the growing pains that are being experienced. It is unfair to those of us who have stayed put and followed the rules. Send these kids to their appropriate school zones immediately.

The majority of students who currently attend Oak View Elementary School out of zone are there due to homes being under construction but not completed by the beginning of the school year.
