Photo Gallery of the Week: Grassland Middle Sixth Grade Strings

Published September 25, 2015

Grassland Middle School sixth graders are busy learning new things in strings class with teacher Susan Houghton.

Students are learning proper instrument care; playing position, bow hold and bowing technique; D major scale; three variations of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star; the Ode to Joy theme; reading notes in the treble, alto and bass clefs; basic rhythm, music terminology and symbols; playing together, team work and of course, being nice.

“I’m very excited about this program,” said GMS Strings Teacher Susan Houghton. “This program means a third music avenue for students, which helps in working our goal to be nationally recognized in the arts. In the future, we’re looking forward to having a full orchestra and having the ability to combine with the band and the choir program to enhance and advance the arts at Grassland Middle.”

Currently, Grassland Middle has 34 students in the sixth grade strings classes.
