The Franklin High, Page High and Ravenwood High marching bands are in Indianapolis this week for the Music for All Bands of America Grand National Championships. Page performed Thursday, November 12. Both Franklin and Ravenwood will perform Friday, November 13. Music for All’s Bands of America Grand National Championships is considered one of the nation’s most prestigious marching band events.
The Brentwood High Marching Band finished its competitive season on November 7 with a record-breaking performance.
The band was named the Group VI Champion and won the award for Best Music Performance at the USBands Southern States Championships in Chattanooga. Thirty-one bands from across the Southeast competed in seven classes representing Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The BHS band posted a score of 98.175, the highest score given nationwide this year in the USBands competition circuit. This score eclipsed the previous record high score of 97.7, set by Brentwood High School in 2013.
Earlier this season, the band was named a finalist at the Bands of America Powder Springs Regional, received the Class B championship at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational and placed third in the Music City Invitational at McGavock High School. The director of the Brentwood Band is Randy Box; and the assistant director is Drew O’Keefe.
Two Centennial High School orchestra students attended Cello Day with the Kentucky Cello Club on September 26. The event was hosted by clinician Dr. Melissa Kraut of the Cleveland Institute of Music. Molly Kate Krieder and Corryn Thomas sat in on a masterclass featuring collegiate and high school cellists from Vanderbilt University, Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University and Nashville area high schools. In the afternoon, both students participated in a pedagogy session and then a play-in session. Molly Kate and Corryn each played a short piece for Dr. Kraut.
The Independence High Marching Band finished in first place in the LAX 5.0 Competition in Antioch on September 26. LAX stands for the Lower Antioch eXperience.
On October 29, nearly 30 Ravenwood High students performed as part of an interest session at the NAfME (National Association for Music Education) Conference at Opryland.
Teachers, professors and administrators from all over the country attended this year’s event. The session was led by Dr. Christopher Peterson from Cal State Fullerton and it was titled, Awakening Creativity in the Choral Rehearsal: Empowering Student Musicians Through Engaging Student-Centered Music Making. The choir was the demonstration choir. Dr. Peterson and RHS choir director Lauren Ramey rehearsed with the students a piece they knew well and a new piece to sight-read in front of everyone.
