Fifth Graders Compete for Trip to NASA

Published April 28, 2016

A group of Edmondson Elementary fifth graders are in the running for a trip to NASA. The students were named finalists in the NASA Optimus Prime Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge (OPSPARC) 2016 contest.

As part of a classroom assignment, the team of Brent Driver, Landon Parker and Gitanjali Rao were tasked with walking through the engineering design process to create a new NASA spinoff technology. They chose to create a new version of the Mars Rover that can be sent inside volcanoes and underwater. The students used a combination of text, images and videos to create a Glogster Multimedia Poster which they submitted for the contest.

After reviewing over 900 entries across the country, the team’s glogster project was chosen as one of 10 finalists eligible for public voting.

“Public voting closes May 2,” said Edmondson teacher and team coach Jennifer Holt. “If they win, the kids will have the opportunity to spend two days at the Goddard Space Center in Maryland where they will learn from the NASA staff.”
