BHS Winter Drumline Keeps the Beat at Southeastern Color Guard Circuit

Published March 30, 2016

In just its first year of existence, the Brentwood High School Winter Drumline is already outperforming the competition. The group recently placed second overall – and first among Tennessee schools – at the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit.

The drumline is comprised of 18 students and led by BHS Band Director Drew O’Keefe.

“Winter Drumline is a great way to help the percussion students continue to improve their skills during the winter season and to build a much needed sense of community and appreciation within the percussion studio at Brentwood High,” said O’Keefe. “Because this was their first year, it was a little surprising for the BHS Winter Drumline to be so successful.”

The SCGC Championships featured groups from all over the Southeastern part of the country. Ravenwood High placed third. Despite the fact that his students had never done anything like this before, O’Keefe says they decided as a group to just have fun and give it their best shot.

“I am extremely proud of these students because of the fact that not only did they win against all other schools in the state but that they won against schools that had more than 30 student members and more than 10 years of competitive experience,” said O’Keefe. “They went into the season with the right perspective, and it proved to be more successful than if they had gone into the season with the goal of winning.”
