Across the Board – October 26, 2015

Blue Ribbon schools and State Championship trophies highlighted the Williamson County Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 26, 2015. The Brentwood High Volleyball team was recognized for winning the 2015 TSSAA championship for a third year in a row. Team members include Kaela Massey, Anna Wilson, Lil Schwarz, Keely Kaufman, Georgia Cotton, Kamryn Carter, Megan Jantzi, Garrett Joiner, Logan Eggleston, Tori Carpenter, Aubry Jantzi, Celia Lamb, Andrea Aceveda, Sydney Rexford, Brianna Uhl, Analeigh Wingo, Kaylee Seidel, Elly Hensley and Aspen Martin. Their coach is Barbara Campbell.

The Brentwood High Boys Golf Team was honored for winning the TSSAA Class AAA Championship. Team members are Nash Gilchrist, Lucas Adcock, Trey Tobias, Dabney Dickenson, Eli Charron, Trevor Johnson, John Tyminski, Trenton Johnson and Ty Craig. Their coach is Bud Robison.

In Staff Spotlights, Woodland Middle teacher Mike Morrow was named the Tennessee Business Education Association’s, TBEA, Secondary Teacher of the Year. Franklin High teacher Leya White received the 2015 Tennessee Council for Exception Children, TN-CEC, Teacher of the Year award.

In School Spotlights, the district’s newest National Blue Ribbon Schools were honored. Representatives from Clovercroft Elementary and Ravenwood High will be formally honored at a November ceremony in Washington, D.C.

In addition, the Board was treated to a musical performance by the Brentwood High Chamber Choir under the direction of Natalie Pratt.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Looney told Board members that a rezoning meeting for Dallas Downs residents will be held on Thursday, November 5 at 6 p.m. in the Oak View Elementary cafeteria. The rezoning will also affect new subdivisions, River Bluff and Nature’s Landing.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson thanked those who attended the recent Let’s Talk School meetings and announced other upcoming meetings.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved one policy on first reading, Parent Organizations/Booster Clubs.
  • Approved tenure recommendations of the Superintendent.
  • Approved classified hiring rates for Information Technology positions and Substitute Teachers.
  • Approved a Code of Ethics for Board members.
  • Approved four 2015-2016 Budget Amendments including one for $14,767 from donations to be used to start an Honors Choir; one for $18,000 from a State grant for IPADS for cafeteria
  • managers; one for $1,304,400 for startup costs for Nolensville High, Mill Creek Elementary and Mill Creek Middle; and one for $368,753 to increase the number of Early Childhood
  • classrooms.
  • Pulled the proposed Religious Liberty & Protection resolution.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved four policies on second reading including Student Schedules, Non-Tenure and Tenure, Drug-Free Workplace and Student Records.
  • Approved the 2016-2017 Budget timeline.
  • Approved a Brentwood United Methodist Church lease agreement at Sunset Middle School.
  • Approved the renovation of the teen living area into TV broadcasting classroom and studio at Centennial High School.
  • Approved the construction of the baseball field replacement and new home run fence at Centennial High School.
  • Approved the construction of a retaining wall at Nolensville High School.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, November 16, 2015, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
