Across the Board – November 16, 2015

It was a celebration of academics, athletics and the arts during the November 16, 2015, Williamson County Board of Education meeting. Ravenwood graduate Rohan Tummala received the Tennessee State Advanced Placement Scholar Award. Woodland Middle’s Ankush Dhar won the Tennessee Mathematics Teacher’s Association High School Math Contest Algebra I Exam. His teacher was Margaret Hill.

In athletics, Centennial High won TSSAA State Championship Large Varsity Cheerleading, team members are Avery Anderson, Ally Beard, Emma Kate Best, Brooklynn Biles, Katelyn Denno, Harly Dwyer, Audrey Eisner, Elli Helmintoller, Caroline Jones, Abbey Jordan, Madison Lawrence, Caroline Manning, Shelby Mathews, Faith Parks, Cassetty Parrish, Lily Shelton, Mackenzie Simpson, Ashton Smith, Anne Tenkhoff and Lauren Wilkinson. Their coach is Chasity Carter.

Ravenwood HIgh won TSSAA State Championship Medium Varsity Cheerleading, team members are Sarah Klippenstein, Kylie Betchley, Becca Zaves, Brooke Phillips, Greta Peterson, Logan Jordan, Lauren Martin, Sydney Fordice, Aerial Griffin, Morgan Lanius, Ally Hankins, Bailey Martin, Reghan Jordan, Bri Fick, Olivia Corley and Sydney Dagostino. Their coaches are Barbee Morgan, Kacy Herald, Jay Noffsinger and Stephanie Dykes.

Brentwood High’s Brodey Hasty won the TSSAA AAA Boys Cross Country State Championship. In addition, the Brentwood High’s Boys Cross Country Team won the TSSAA AAA State Championship. Team members include Taylor Vroon, Jackson Vroon, Brodey Hasty, Garrett Grissim, Ryan Lee, Chase Puskar and Rayaan Bashir. Their coach is Billy Anderson.

In the arts, the Franklin High School Band was named the 2015 Division I State Grand Champion and earned the Tennessee Governor’s Cup. The band director is David Aydelott. The Page High School Band was named the 2015 Division II State Grand Champion. The band director is Matt Emerson.

Williamson County is well represented with All State Choir honors. Brentwood’s Julia Lifferth and Hannah Oakley were named to the All State Choir. Their teacher is Natalie Pratt. Centennial’s McKenzie Garey, Leeza Cox, Cassie Trabucco and Joe Wandass also earned those honors. Their teacher is Jeff Myrick. Franklin’s Abigail Newman and Kaitlin Logan were named. Their teacher is Cynthia Fehrman. Independence High’s Andrew Maguire, Kenzie Barnett, Isaac Thompson were named to the choir. Their teacher is Sydney Shadrix. Ravenwood’s Sarah Yang, Lauren Case, Amanda Miserocchi, Claire Sudarshan, Camille Vulcano, Anna Wellander, Sierra Gonzalez, Lauren Haynes, William Exler, Tristan Tournaud, Haiz Webb, Nathan Keffer and Dylan Hughes earned a place in the All State choir. Their teacher is Lauren Ramey. Summit’s Jessica Singer, Nicole Turner, Scott Brooks, Nathan Willis, Kayla Hack and Celina James were named to the group. Their teacher is Jenna Elsberry.

In Staff Spotlights, District Athletic Director Jeremy Qualls received the A.F. Bridges District 6 Administrator of the Year award.

In addition, the Board was treated to a strings performance prior to the meeting by Sunset Middle and Ravenwood High under the direction of Craig Madole.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney welcomed the Summit High government class and teacher Jeff Graves who were observing the meeting. He also shared updates on substitutes, bus drivers and custodians.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson announced that the Board would not have any meetings in December but would begin its business on January 4, 2016, with the policy committee meeting. He also called on Board member Mark Gregory who encouraged the Board to participate in TSBA functions and who congratulated the Franklin Special School Board for being named School Board of the Year by the TSBA, Dr. Looney for being recognized as the Superintendent of the Year and Chairman Anderson for being recognized by the TSBA for his 25 years of service to the Williamson County School Board.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved the Five Year Capital Outlay Plan for 2015-2020.
  • Approved the 2016-17 school calendar. Some highlights include the first day for teachers is August 1; first day for students is August 5 with a half day; last day for students is May 23; and the last day for teachers is May 24.
  • Approved the PECCA Collaborative Conferencing Process/Appointment of Special Question Committee.
  • Approved a rezoning proposal for the 2016-17 school year with the removal of Dallas Downs subdivision.
  • Approved two 2015-2016 Budget Amendments including one for $62,627 from the Energy Efficient Schools Grant and one for $54,929 from Service King for an auto class teacher at Franklin High.
  • Approved two 2015-16 Budget Resolutions including one for $290,000 for additional textbooks and one for $127,820 for two additional English Language Learner teachers due to growth.
  • Approved an Intent to Fund Resolution for $7,400,000 for land, design and site work for a south elementary/middle school.
  • Voted to postpone indefinitely social media guidelines for the Board handbook.
  • Approved one policy on second reading, Parent Organizations/Booster Clubs.
  • Approved a Carl Perkins CTE Incentive Grant for 2016.
  • Approved the 2015 LEA Compliance Report.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved the membership of the Textbook Adoption Committee.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2016, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
