Across the Board – June 20, 2016

Athletics was the focus of Student Spotlights during the regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education on June 20, 2016.

TSSAA State Champions in tennis from Brentwood are Sam Fischer who won the Boys Tennis Single Class AAA and Somer Henry who won the TSSAA State Champion Girls Tennis Singles Class AAA. Georgia Fischer and Katie DeWald won the TSSAA State Champion Girls Tennis Doubles Class AAA, and Georgia Fischer, Marla Leone, Yi Qu, Somer Henry, Katie Dewald, Abby Longhurst, Nikki Christiansen, Grace Dodson and Cassidy Crouch were named the TSSAA State Champions for Girls Tennis Team Class AAA. Their coach is Bill Jayne.

In Boys Track and Field, Brentwood’s Brody Hasty won the TSSAA State Champion Boys Track and Field 1600 Meter Run Class AAA. Max Benson, Scott Thompson, Chase Puskar and Ryan Lee won the TSSAA State Champion Boys Track and Field 4×800 Meter Relay Class AAA. Their coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.

From Centennial, Jonathan Helton won the TSSAA State Champion Boys Track and Field 800 Meter Run Class AAA, and Jack Crouch won the TSSAA State Champion Boys Track and Field Pole Vault Class AAA. Their coach is Shawn Carter.

In Girls Track and Field, Riley Coggin, Cassie Baldwin, Emma Jay and Hailey Hendry from Brentwood won the TSSAA 4×800 Meter Relay Class AAA. Their coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.

Mary Leichner from Page won the TSSAA State Champion Girls Track and Field Pole Vault Class A-AA. Her coaches are Ron Brock and Carrie Vatucci.

From Ravenwood, Amber Tanner won TSSAA State Champion Girls Track and Field Pentathlon and TSSAA State Champion Girls Track and Field 300 Meter Hurdles Class AAA. Amber Tanner, Riley White, Grace Parsons and Addison White won the TSSAA State Champion Girls Track and Field 4×400 Meter Relay Class AAA. Their coach is Pete Mueller.

In staff spotlights, Cory Mason and the Communications Department received the 2016 National School Public Relations Association Golden Achievement Award for the Academic All-Stars program.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared that recruiting and hiring was proceeding throughout the district.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson reminded Board members of the upcoming TSBA conference and the Williamson Chamber Business Expo, which is Tuesday at The Factory.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved five policies on first reading including School Calendar, Project Planning, Religious Content of Courses, Teacher Assistants and Bullying.
  • Approved a request for exemption to the compulsory attendance law.
  • Approved classified pay rates for 2016-17.
  • Approved final intra-category amendments to the 2015-16 general purpose school fund, central cafeteria fund and school aged child care budgets.
  • Approved a budget amendment for commodities for the 2015-16 cafeteria budget.
  • Approved a lease/purchase agreement for Apple and Dell computers for Career and Technical Education classes.
  • Approved the Superintendent’s evaluation survey.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved two policies on second reading including Testing for Credit and Credit Requirements for Graduation.
  • Approved the PECCA Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Approved the All Saints Presbyterian Church lease agreement at Lipscomb Elementary.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, August 15, 2016, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
