Across the Board – August 17, 2015

The Williamson County Board of Education honored language students during its August 17, 2015, meeting. Seven students placed first in National Language Exams during the past year. Brentwood’s Michele Holtkamp received first in the National German 3 Exam, and Sailesh Sitaram received first in the National German 2 Exam. Their teacher is Emily Dawson.
Brentwood’s Emily Reeves earned first place on the National Spanish 5 Exam. Her teacher is Dr. Ron Thompson. Brentwood’s Spencer Williams earned first on the National Spanish 4 Exam. Her teacher is Dr. Ron Thompson. Centennial’s Andrea Jacinto earned first on the National Spanish 4 Exam, Outside Experience. Her teacher is Erin Caceres.
Brentwood’s Chiraag Kaushik earned first on the National Spanish 3 Exam. His teacher is Dr. Ron Thompson. Cristobal Spielmann was first on the National Spanish 2 Exam Bilingual. His teacher is Rebecca Roa.
In staff spotlights, LTC (Ret) Michael P. Goodwin, Centennial High, was awarded the JROTC Bronze and Silver Teaching Awards.
In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared that the district had a good start to the school year. He told the group that there was still a need for bus drivers. He added that the district had a new cleaning contract and that there are issues in some schools with the cleaning of buildings. He said that the district was addressing those issues.
Board Chairman PJ Mezera reminded Board members about their upcoming retreat.
In New Business, the Board:
- Approved the textbook adoption of Art and the American Identity for a high school special course for 2015-16.
- Approved having the staff address a City of Fairview request for a road dedication at Westwood Elementary.
- Approved joining the Tennessee School Boards Association for 2015-16.
- Approved the School Board annual agenda for 2015-2016.
- Approved Sick Leave Bank Trustees for 2015-2016.
- Approved consultant contracts.
- Approved a change to the minutes from July 20, 2015.
In other business, the Board:
- Approved the Superintendent contract addendum number seven.
- Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
- Approved two policies on second reading including Cleaning Program and Repairs & Alterations.
- Approved School Board meeting dates for 2015-2016.
- Approved Board parameters for 2015-2016.
- Approved outstanding purchase orders for school activity funds.
- Approved Page High School soccer field shelters.
The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, September 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
