Across the Board – April 18, 2016

Students and staff members were in the spotlight once again during the regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education on April 18, 2016. Jared Boggs from Ravenwood was honored for earning a Perfect ACT score.

Summit High’s Jayden Cartelli won first place at the State HOSA competition in Home Health Aide. Her teachers are Denise Asbury and Christina Isong.

In the State Culinary Students Taking Action for Recognition, STAR, competition, Summit students Lindsay Trigona, Kaitlynne Bivings, Dallys Highfill won first place. Their teacher is Marsha Johnson.

A number of Page High students brought home first place state honors from the Tennessee Technology Student Association competition. Sean McCabe, Rachel Kubricky, Katherine Hill, Michael Bianchi, Natalie Briscoe and Riley Cochrane won in Architectural Design; Timothy Demonbreun, Katherine Hill, Matthew Bogle and Rafe Erisman won in Biotechnology Design; Matthew Bogle won in Dragster Design; Michael Bianchi and Riley Cochrane won in Structural Design & Engineering; and Paxton Lifsey won in Transportation Modeling. Their teachers are Beth Foreman and Jimmy Baker.

In Staff Spotlights, Centennial and Franklin teacher Stacey Kizer was recognized for receiving the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Outstanding Educator Award. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Rebecca Owens was honored for being named the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials Tennessee Outstanding Business Official. Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney was presented with the 2016 Tennessee Music Educators Association Outstanding Administrator of the Year

In addition, the Board was treated to a musical performance prior to the meeting by Heritage Middle School’s Vox Aurea under the direction of Lisa Benton.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared that juniors across the district would be taking the ACT on April 19. He also mentioned that students should begin TN Ready testing on April 28.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson reminded the Board that the Shining Apple awards ceremony honoring school volunteers would be held April 19. He also praised the district, students and teachers for a fabulous Fine Arts Festival. That event occurred on April 9.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved the adoption of CTE textbooks.
  • Approved High School special course applications.
  • Approved seven 2015-2016 School Board Budget amendments/resolutions including a resolution for $308,100 for the Extended School Program Fund; an amendment for $291,000 for the Central Cafeteria Fund; an amendment for $29,253 for donations from the Feed the COW program; a resolution for $317,600 to cover funds needed for substitutes; a resolution for $588,000 for additional special education expenses; a resolution for $300,000 for Trustee’s commission; and a resolution for $232,122 due to Title I cuts.
  • Approved an amendment to the proposed 2016-2017 General Purpose School Board Budget to recover the cuts to Title I funds. There is no net affect.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved the use of facilities fees. Those fees will remain the same.
  • Did not approve a proposed settlement of threatened lawsuit.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, May 16, 2016, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
