The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, coupons to Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.
Every morning, seventh-grader Sydney Fogarty steps off the bus with a smile on her face. That, combined with her desire to do well in school, made her the perfect Academic All-Star for Woodland Middle School.
“Sydney has high expectations for herself and strives for perfection in all she does with her indomitable work ethic,” said WMS Principal Priscilla Fizer. “Sydney is simply a ray of sunshine. Even on a rainy day, she brightens the mood of friends, faculty and even strangers. Sydney’s smile is truly her fortune and also her gift to Woodland.”
Maybe the reason Sydney is so happy each morning is she gets to start the day off in her favorite class, language arts.
“I love to write, and I love to read,” said Sydney. “I also love to speak. That’s all kind of wrapped up into one, and the teacher is great for our language arts class.”
Positivity is a big part of Sydney’s life. One of her favorite things about Woodland Middle is getting to make other people happy just by saying hello.
“I love seeing my friends, and I just like to learn,” said Sydney. “I just like to make other people happy, so whenever I get off the bus, I say hello to the teachers I pass.”
One of Sydney’s favorite past-times is designing and sewing clothes, which is something she has done since she was seven-years-old. Sydney says she’d like to one day be a fashion designer, and she plans to take sewing classes this summer.
“When I finally got a sewing machine, I started making little dresses and stuff for my dolls,” said Sydney. “As I got older, I tried making stuff for myself.”
Sydney knows the importance of doing well in school, but she knows that sometimes things don’t always go the way she wants.
“I just want to do well in school,” said Sydney. “I don’t freak out if I don’t get the best grade. I just try to do better the next time.”
