The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, coupons to Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.
Hard work pays off. Just ask 11-year-old Piper Harvey. The Walnut Grove fifth grader’s positive attitude and dedication to her studies has made a real difference this year, which is why she was named the school’s Academic All-Star.
“Piper is a hard-working student whose dramatic improvement in the classroom has made her the perfect choice for this award,” said her fifth-grade teachers at Walnut Grove.
Piper began attending Walnut Grove in first grade, and while she’s always been a good student, her teachers say this year has been extra special.
“Throughout the year, we’ve seen her success and confidence grow as she realized her potential,” said her teachers. “In addition to her academics, Piper’s personality has blossomed, and she has come into her own.”
Piper has not one, not two, but three favorite subjects: math, reading and social studies. She likes math because she enjoys working with fractions; she loves reading because she likes chapter books; and she likes social studies because she enjoys learning about history.
“In social studies this year, we’ve been learning about World War I and World War II,” said Piper. “Now we’re learning about the Cold War.”
When she’s not in school, Piper likes to play outside and ride her bike. In the fall, she’ll start sixth grade at Grassland Middle. Although she’s kind of nervous about the transition, Piper’s teachers say they’re confident good things will happen for her as she moves forward in life.
“Even when the work is difficult, Piper never complains or gives up,” said her teachers. “She goes above and beyond what is expected of her. We are very proud of Piper, and we predict she has a bright future ahead of her.”
