Academic All-Star – Scales Elementary

Published April 22, 2016

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, coupons to Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.

He may be 11-years-old, but Scales Elementary fifth grader Sam Boroughs already understands the importance of hard work and a positive attitude.

That’s why teachers and administrators selected him as the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2015-16 school year.

“Sam comes to school every day with a great attitude,” said Scales Principal Molly Dalgarn. “He is always motivated to give his best whether it is on assignments, helping friends or helping adults. He perseveres through difficult tasks and never gives up. Sam continuously models exemplary behavior in all areas without prompting.”

Sam began attending Scales in second grade after he moved to Williamson County from Alabama. He says his favorite subject is math.

“I like solving problems,” said Sam. “I like multiplication. I just think it’s fun, even though sometimes it’s really hard.”

When he’s not busy in the classroom, Sam loves to play baseball. He’s been playing since he was four-years-old and says he plans to try out for the baseball team at Brentwood Middle next year.

“I can’t wait until I try out for baseball, because it’s like a competition,” said Sam. “I’m going against other people to make it on the team, and I think that’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Although he’ll be making the move to middle school, Sam says the one thing that will stay consistent is the importance he places on his schoolwork.

“Your future depends on it,” said Sam. “When you’re ready to go to college, they might not look at your elementary school grades, but you have to get to college by making good grades or else you’ll never make it.”
