Academic All-Star – Clovercroft Elementary

The Academic All-Star award is given to students who exhibit a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence in the classroom. Each Academic All-Star is chosen by his or her principal and receives a framed certificate, coupons to Sonic Drive-In and a free gift courtesy of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More in Franklin.
Polite, driven and well-spoken. Those are just a few of the adjectives teachers use to describe 10-year-old Grey Hawkins, who was named Clovercroft Elementary’s Academic All-Star for the 2015-16 school year.
“Grey is one of the most polite children we’ve taught at Clovercroft,” said fifth grade teacher Chet Verner. “His academic performance has improved in each of our three classes. Grey is kind to his classmates, teachers and other students with whom he interacts.”
Grey will attend Woodland Middle in the fall, and while he’s excited, he knows he’ll miss the teachers and friends at Clovercroft.
“A lot of my friends will be going to a different school than I will next year so that’s kind of sad,” said Grey. “Also, the teachers here are really good. They help me understand how to work things out, and they make it really easy.”
Grey’s favorite subject is math, but he hopes to have a career as a professional athlete or a physician.
“I’d like to play in the NFL,” said Grey. “If I can’t do that, I’d like to be a doctor.”
Grey says he’s motivated to do well in school because he wants to have successful career no matter which profession he chooses.
“I want to have a good job when I get older,” said Grey. “That way I won’t have to worry about a lot of things on my mind, and I’ll have an easier life.”
Although he’s honored to accept the award, Grey admits he’s still getting used to the idea of being an Academic All-Star.
“It’s weird,” said Grey. “I don’t know what to say. It’s an amazing feeling.”
