A group of students from Centennial and Franklin high schools were given the opportunity February 4 to serve as ambassadors during Disability Day at the Tennessee State Capitol.
The Transition II students met with elected officials and visited booths set up by agencies which serve individuals with disabilities.
“It was an awesome experience for the students,” said Centennial Transition II Teacher Jan Lincoln. “These students were chosen as they had demonstrated excellent social skills and completed training with flying colors.”
The students enjoyed the experience as well.
“We enjoyed getting to sit at the same desk where the state legislators sit during their sessions,” said Centennial Transition II students Kara Jackson and Christian Moneghan.
FHS student Alyia Petleski’s favorite speaker was Linda Brown, President of ARC of Rutherford County, who shared a personal testimony about her journey into disability advocacy.
“She was just my favorite because she told us something personal and I liked that,” said Alyia.
This opportunity rotates annually between the Transition II classes in the county. Two schools are chosen each year to represent this population.
