Thank You, WCS Bus Drivers!

Have you thanked your WCS bus driver lately? This week, October 20-24, is National Bus Driver Appreciation Week.

WCS would like to thank all of bus drivers for the hard work they do day in and day out to get WCS students to and from school and extra-curricular activities safely.

The WCS School Board has approved a modification for bus driver compensation. This looks as follows:

  1. Start our hiring rate at Level 1, $14.08 per hour, rather than Level 0, $13.53. This would also include raising the current pay rate of 20 drivers to $14.08.
  2. Pay an additional $50 for each day a regular driver covers a second route ($25 for morning route, $25 for afternoon route, prorated based on number of drivers sharing an uncovered route). This will increase the pool of willing drivers to cover those day-to-day routes that are currently not covered due to the driver shortage.
  3. Give a $500 finder’s fee for any employee in the school district who finds a bus driver. This bonus would be paid at the end of this school year if the driver finishes the year employed.
  4. Pay drivers up to 30 minutes per day to get to their bus in the morning and back in the afternoon if assigned to routes that are 30 minutes or more from home. This will increase the paid time for those drivers who must travel further from home to cover needed routes. It would not cover every minute of personal travel for these routes but will make those hard to fill routes a little more attractive.
  5. Approve hiring part time drivers. This will allow hiring drivers who might only want to work in the morning or afternoon. These part time individuals would not be eligible for benefits.
  6. Give a quarterly $50 bonus for drivers who have perfect attendance.
  7. Pay for/reimburse drivers’ annual DoT physical up to $50, the amount that is currently charged by the provider who visits Transportation’s campus to perform the service.
  8. Give full time drivers two personal days annually.
