This week, they will look at gases. Third grade will begin learning division in math. In social studies, the students will be learning about elections and voting, the three branches of government and civic responsibilities. The students and teachers dressed in fifties clothes to mark the occasion. Poodle skirts, jeans rolled up, white t-shirts and then… Elvis! Elvis! Elvis! made an appearance adding even more fun with song and dance. It was a great week at Oak View!

Walnut Grove’s kindergarten classes are finishing up a unit on living and non-living objects. The students used their five senses and science tools to investigate and observe pumpkins. They predicted what the inside of the pumpkin would look like and then observed how it really looked. They observed the outside of mini-pumpkins using science tools like magnifying glasses and measuring cubes and made predictions about whether or not it would float. The students are also learning about different fall holidays and traditions and participated in the fall tradition of painting pumpkins to celebrate Halloween.

Dads in P.E. brought lots of fun into P.E. this week. Students and their dads participated in partner warm-ups and several games. Students were thrilled to compete against their fathers. November’s character focus will be “Perseverance.” Meanwhile, Mr. McKaig’s sixth grade science class is learning how to use weather tools. Students are grappling with predicting weather through investigations involving heat transfer in our atmosphere. And the sixth grade math class just finished its Mosaic Art Project Pieces. The students had to come up with their own tile art using paper tiles. After they completed their tile art, each student had to compute what fraction, percent and decimal each color made up in their art. The students really enjoyed the project. It was a great conclusion to our percentage unit.
