The information below is provided by each school. Schools are listed in alphabetical order according to grade level.

Elementary Schools

Allendale Elementary

This week, Allendale students celebrated Read Across America. The week began with a visit from New York Times Bestselling author Laura Duksta. On Friday, the students participated in the Coast to Coast Challenge. Each student had the opportunity to read a book and complete a reading test. The goal was to read as many books as they could during the school day. Allendale students read over 1,000 books for the challenge. The rest of the week was spent with silent reading, buddy reading and dress up days to celebrate the joy of a good book.

Bethesda Elementary

In honor of Read Across America Week, students at Bethesda Elementary have enjoyed participating in several fun dress-up days.

Crockett Elementary

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Crockett Elementary School first graders paraded through the halls with their Dr. Seuss-themed floats. Also, Principal Robert Bohrer read Dr. Seuss books to various classes, children voted on their favorite Dr. Seuss book during library, and they participated in other themed, curriculum activities. In upcoming events, spring pictures will be taken on Monday, March 9; the physical education department is sponsoring March to Fitness March 9-13 with special activities scheduled for each day; and the rescheduled third grade musical will be held on Thursday, March 12 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Edmondson Elementary

Brentwood Mayor Betsy Crossley came to speak with the kindergarten and first grade classes at Edmondson Elementary. We had a great time learning about her job, how she helps people, how she became elected and even who her BFF is! Thank you Mayor Crossley!

Fairview Elementary

Lots of excitement around FES this week! In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America week, we were visited by Curious George himself! He had a friend with him who read aloud a story about his visit to a fire station. Then he visited individual classrooms to see the students. So fun! Third graders went to Nashville Children’s theater last Friday, February 27 to see their performance of Jack Tales. In preparation of seeing the show, students studied vocabulary and the folklore of Tennessee. The show was great and full of songs and stories.

Heritage Elementary

Heritage Elementary celebrates Read Across America week! Andie Weaver and Ms. Cunningham celebrated “Many Colored Monday!” Students also celebrated “Truffula Tuesday,” “Wacky Wednesday,” “Thing 1 & 2 Thursay” and “Cat and the Hat Friday.”

Hunters Bend Elementary

Hunters Bend students celebrated Dr. Seuss by continuing our curriculum but adding on a Dr. Seuss theme! We had guest readers, computer activities, and really fun science experiments! During library time, students read through Dr. Seuss books and voted on their favorites. We would like to remind everyone that kindergarten registration is just around the corner. Registration will be March 23-27 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. daily. We will also be at school from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday. You will need to bring with you the following: official copy of the child’s birth certificate, 2 proofs of your residence, immunization records, and photo identification for parent. We will provide you with the rest of the enrollment forms in your child’s folder. You will also be signing up for a test time, so please bring your calendar with you.

Kenrose Elementary

The Kenrose PTO sponsored the annual Muffins for Mom on February 27 and March 2. Families enjoyed muffins and donuts. Thanks to the KES PTO and everyone who participated.

Lipscomb Elementary

Fifth graders at Lipscomb Elementary are learning all about Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Nolensville Elementary

Congratulations to the NES Destination Imagination fifth grade team for earning first place in local competition! Team members include Luke Jackson, Malek Chmayssani, Nathan Montpool, Dylan High, Zachary Klotz, and Connor Keegan. They are led by Jennifer Jackson. They will move on to compete state-wide in April. We wish them the best of luck as they represent NES. There were six challenges available and the team chose Creature Feature. They built a creature which could complete three independent actions, developed a storyline, added elements like props and music….and then some. There were eight teams in the challenge.

Scales Elementary

The Scales Elementary 5th Grade Quiz Bowl Team placed first in the competition Saturday, February 21 at MBA. Meanwhile, Tom Bancroft, former illustrator for Disney, visited Scales and talked to kindergarten, first and second grades about illustrating. He even discussed how Mickey Mouse was drawn.

Trinity Elementary

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Trinity Elementary had their annual book character parade and vocabulary parade. On Monday, the kindergarten, first and second graders dressed up like their favorite book character. On Tuesday, the third, fourth and fifth graders dressed up as a vocabulary word. Each group paraded in the gym with their class to show-off their costume. Last week, Trinity’s PTO hosted the annual Scholastic Book fair. Students had a wonderful time purchasing books and parents were even invited Wednesday morning to come enjoy the book fair with their students.

Walnut Grove Elementary

Read Across America Week at Walnut Grove is an annual reading event in kindergarten. We celebrate reading and teach our students about the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Students read the book ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and learned how Dr. Seuss used sight words, rhyming words, repeated phrases and text/illustration match to help beginning readers. They learned about a type of non-fiction book called a ‘biography’ and some interesting facts about Dr. Seuss’ early life and the events that inspired his writing. Students read books published by the “I Can Read It All By Myself” Beginner Book Company – a company created by Dr. Seuss to help publish other like-minded authors. Dr. Seuss stories have inspired beginning readers for over 50 years! We celebrate how Dr. Seuss changed beginning reading books to help motivate young students to read!

Westwood Elementary

Art students at Westwood Elementary have been very busy during the first weeks of second semester! Kindergarteners are currently learning about symmetry and creating “Big Symmetrical Bugs” using oil pastels and watercolor pencils. First graders have created mixed media still lifes and “Pointillism Fish Paintings.” Second grade has enjoyed making paintings of winter cardinals and is now busy experimenting with printmaking. Third grade classes have been very excited to create animal sculptures with paper mache. In the fourth grade, students are learning about Mexican folk art and making metal tooling projects to illustrate Aztec suns. Fifth graders have completed self-portraits in the style of artist Paul Klee, and are ready to begin a unit on architectural drawing.

Winstead Elementary

Winstead had a fantastic day celebrating Read Across America! The focus was on children as teachers promoted the joy found in reading. In the library, Mrs. Wright had several literacy activities surrounding Dr. Seuss books. Kindergarten students made Oobleck to go along with Bartholomew and Oobleck to learn more about the properties of solid and liquids. First grade incorporated Dr. Seuss into centers for students to enjoy. Second grade invited parents as guest readers and had several Dr.Seuss activities. Important dates to remember: Spring Break March 16-20. Kindergarten registration, March 25 and 26.

Middle Schools

Grassland Middle

It’s getting close to playoff hockey time in Smashville! All Pro Dad’s breakfast will be held, Monday, March 9. NHL veteran and former Nashville Predator JP Dumont will discuss his perspectives on balancing life as a NHL player and being an All Pro Dad in our community.

Heritage Middle

Believe it or not… Spring is in the air at HMS! All of our spring sports will be having try outs this week. Get ready for some great HMS teams! Our choirs recently went to the MTVA Choral Festival in Murfreesboro and came home with loads of trophies! The 7th grade choir received a Superior in Performance; the eighth grade choir also received a Superior in Performance; and the sixth grade choir received a Superior in Sight Reading. Great Job and kudos to all choir members and our wonderful choir director, Lisa Benton. This weekend, the HMS Theatre will present their production of “Aladdin Jr.” Please check our website for dates and times.

Hillsboro School

Congratulations to our varsity boys basketball team for a great showing in the WMAA District Tournament! The boys lost in the semifinal round 46-50 against Page. It was a close game until the final seconds! Congratulations to Coach Young and all of our boys basketball players on a memorable season!

Sunset Middle

Sunset Middle 7th grade students recently exchanged facts about sports with students at the Mahatma CBSE school in Madurai, India. Their teacher, Kari Ohnemus, studied education systems in Madurai. One of the teachers at the school contacted her to have their students participate in an international fact file exchange. The Indian 7th grade students sent pictures of themselves learning about sports from around the world and asked that we send pictures and information about American sports. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in international dialogue with peers from across the globe.

Woodland Middle

Congratulations to the following students for representing Woodland at the Wililamson County Art Show at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville: Ella Skaar, Kendall Kocian, Jake Rath, Alina Spatz, Mina Lagrange and Drew Fritts. Abby Burton, a sixth grader and winner of our school spelling bee, represented WMS at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, placing 11th out of 97 students who competed in the bee on Saturday. Abby spelled sierra, knish, amicable, garibaldi, and fraulein to advance through round six of the competition. She did an outstanding job representing WMS. Abby, we are very proud of you!

High Schools

Brentwood High

This past weekend in Boston, BHS Junior Michele Holtkamp competed in the Crash-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championship, which featured 2,200 entrants from two dozen countries. Michele finished 7th in the world out of 154 competitors in her division. This is an amazing accomplishment for a high school junior. Michele will be one of 10 BHS students who will compete and represent BHS at the Southeast Scholastic Rowing Championships on May 2 in Chattanooga.

Fairview High

Fairview High School juniors attended the annual ACT breakfast this week before taking their big test. The students were given the opportunity to meet, greet, and eat before concentrating on their test. The ACT breakfast was held in the school’s auditorium and teachers helped serve students breakfast while offering them motivation to do their very best. During this time, the students were also able to talk with their teachers about any last minute test-taking strategies. The Fairview High School annual JROTC Military Ball was held the last week in February. The JROTC program is a federally funded program intended to instill lifelong skills in citizenship, leadership and responsibility in high school students.

Franklin High

Four members of the FHS Forensics (Speech, Debate, and Interp) team traveled to Gatlinburg for the Carson-Newman Invitational last Friday and Saturday. All total, they competed in a combined 14 events, for an astounding 31 rounds of competition. Senior Nina Donovan brought home two semifinal medals and sophomore Musa Subramaniam garnered one semifinal medal. Next up: The NSDA National Qualifying Tourney this weekend.

Page High

Cheerleader clinics for Page High football and basketball will be held Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the wellness gym. Cheerleading try-outs will be Wednesday, March 11 from 3 p.m. until completion in the wellness gym. All candidates must bring their application packets no later than Monday, March 9 before clinics begin. Application and release forms must be turned in or students won’t be able to participate in practice sessions thus making them ineligible to try-out. The fee is $10 for clinic and try-outs. Students will be taught a dance, a floor cheer, and a chant in the clinic. The girl’s will be trying out in small groups.

Ravenwood High

The Ravenwood High School Mock Trial team took first place at a recent competition in Franklin. RHS was also awarded Best Attorney and Best Witness.

Summit High

Congratulations to senior Julie Langella for being selected as one of the 10 Finalists in the Mix 92.9 Singing Star Competition. The winner of the competition will be announced on the Mix Morning Show on Friday, March 13. Also, congratulations to wrestling coach Pete Miller for receiving the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Coach of the Year for TN.
