The Super Scientist, Mr. Richie, paid a recent visit to Bethesda Elementary to teach third graders about separating mixtures. The students Lisa McCullough’s class used a marker to make their design. Then rubbing alcohol was dropped in the middle and it spread the marker into a beautiful design.

Clovercroft Elementary

At the beginning of the school year, each grade at Clovercroft Elementary School chose a local organization for which to perform acts of service throughout the year. Our fifth grade chose The Boys and Girls Club of Fairview. Their second service project involved making Valentines and sending in treats for the boys and girls at the club. Students made the Valentines at home and they included very kind notes. Some parents signed up to bring in treats. Their collection of kindness was organized and then delivered by a groups of fifth grade parents and students after school.

Crockett Elementary

Crockett Elementary fourth graders recently had the opportunity to engage in an educational theater presentation called “Giants of Electrical Science.” The students learned about electricity and how it worked. They also learned about Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, Michael Faraday and Thomas Edison and their contributions to the science of electricity. In other news, the PTO Family Fun Night and Auction has been rescheduled for Friday, March 6 from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Our fabulous night of festivities includes Jet’s Pizza, Sweet CeCe’s, Mr. Bond the Science Guy, Anthony the Balloon Kid and our own patriotic game of BINGO with Mr. Bohrer! The staff consists of writers, interviewers, photographers, illustrators and layout artists. The first issue was well received and the second issue is shaping up to be another winner. The new issue is scheduled to be published the first week of March.

Fairview Elementary

At FES, we are getting back into the swing of school! After a long break, everyone was thankful to be back. Fourth graders this week are working on combining their math skills and their storytelling skills. Using a program called Storyjumper, students are creating math word problems involving decomposing fractions. They are excited to show their skills off and have fun at the same time. Third graders took their writing assessment this week and will wind up the week by going on a field trip to the Nashville Children’s Theater to see a show on Jack tales. They have been studying these local folklore in preparation and are excited to see a good show.

Middle Schools

Grassland Middle

The Grassland Middle School Scholastic Book Fair Fiesta is back again to give students and teachers an opportunity to purchase a wide variety of books and other educational materials! The book fair promotes literacy and raises funds for school library materials. It has also funded author visits by Roland Smith, Tracy Barrett and Tim Green! Students visit the fair with their language arts classes and can purchase books for themselves or from their teachers’ “wish lists.” Additionally, the DEAR at Home Challenge encourages all students to sit down with a parent and Drop Everything and READ for 20 minutes and then take a minute to talk about why that is important! Chuck Sugg generously gave us Sonic treat coupons to give to everyone who takes the challenge and the winner of this drawing gets a $25 Scholastic Book Fair Gift Certificate!

Heritage Middle

Our HMS students are rigorously and, in the case of Ms. Fischer’s 6th grade science classes, deliciously, learning this week. Learning the different phases of the moon has never been sweeter when you can create them using Oreos. This hands-on learning experience was just another way to help our students retain this sweet learning. In 7th grade science before the impromptu snow break, Ms. Telford’s student’s were busy using their knowledge of Newton’s Laws of Motion, simple machines and the engineering/design process to create a Rube Goldberg Device using classroom supplies. Students were challenged to create a device containing at least four unique energy transfers that could carry out a simple task (such as turning off the light, closing the door, ringing a bell or turning on a faucet). Loads of great learning going on at HMS!
