Published April 2, 2015

The information below is provided by each school. Schools are listed in alphabetical order according to grade level.

Elementary Schools

Allendale Elementary

Third graders at Allendale have been learning about the continents in social studies. In reading, they have read about wind energy and applied the knowledge to the study of weather in science! In math, they are using t-charts to learn about elapsed time.

Bethesda Elementary

Bethesda Elementary School’s first grade students had an Educational Easter Egg Hunt, Wednesday April 1. All the eggs are paper with words written on them or questions written on them. They find the eggs and put them in their basket. They have to read the words or answer the questions written on the eggs. If they get the answer correct they will get a piece of candy for each egg they answer correctly.

Clovercroft Elementary

Congratulations to the six Clovercroft artists whose artwork will be on display during Williamson County’s 2nd Annual Fine Arts Festival on March 28. Clovercroft is so proud of these students: Olivia Ciulla, Cooper Hill, Pius Clay, Gianna Delconte, Marley Myhre and Macie Howell. Clovercroft will also host the Clovercroft Derby on Friday, April 10.

College Grove Elementary

While on the Historical Downtown Nashville Walking Tour, fifth grade College Grove Elementary students got a surprise sighting of our very own Governor Haslam. He graciously posed for a picture with these wonderful WCS students.

Crockett Elementary

Crockett Elementary School’s Run Club has begun. The club was created to help promote healthy living through regular physical exercise. It is open to all students in grades K-5. Online school supply ordering has also begun and will continue through June 15. Organized by our PTO, supplies may be purchased through 1st Day School Supplies as a convenience to our parents. In other news, the cafeteria workers were celebrated this past week for all the hard work they do every day. In particular, we would like to thank them for preparing and serving Breakfast with Dad. The food was delicious and the service was top notch. In upcoming events, Movie Night at Crockett will be after school on Thursday, April 9. The movie will be Big Hero 6 and the kids will stay after school for the movie and snacks. Tickets to this event were sold during the PTO’s online Auction.

Edmondson Elementary

The Edmondson Elementary library has a new look and layout. Librarian Stephanie Smith relocated the instruction area for student’s library classes. The smart board and student seating area is now located at the front of the room. Bookshelves were rearranged to make a larger meeting space in the middle of the library. The move allows for a more open spacious feel and the students and staff are pleased with the change.

Heritage Elementary

The Heritage Elementary PTO will be hosting its 2nd Annual Mother/Son Punt, Pass, Kick on Saturday, April 11. The HES Annual Spring Fling is confirmed for Friday, April 17 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wristbands can be purchased in advance through HES for $8 per child or at the door for $10. Come enjoy food vendors, bounce house, silent auction, dunk tank and lots of games!

Hunters Bend Elementary

Hunters Bend is having the first ever Boosterthon fun run fundraiser! We really hope this will be a fun event for all our students and their families. Some of you may be wondering “Why are we doing Boosterthon?” Excellent question. For the past few years, HBES PTO has operated with the “one fundraiser” model, with Invest being our only big fundraiser of the year. We certainly appreciate all who generously donate during Invest! However, in order to continue to provide the best possible educational experience for our children, we are looking to new ways to fundraise. The Boosterthon model comes highly recommended by many Williamson County schools. Boosterthon combines character building, physical fitness, and school spirit. We think this will be a winning combination, and Boosterthon makes it simple to ask grandparents, aunts and uncles, and friends and family who live in other places to quickly and simply make a pledge or donation for your student. Plus we hope it will be lots of fun! The PTO has purchased much classroom technology for our students over the past few years. As technology and teaching materials change, the need for additional classroom technology grows each year. The Spring Book Fair is the week of April 20- 24. If you have any questions regarding the sign-up, please contact Natalie Gottwals,ngottwals@yahoo.com. Information about ordering school supplies will be coming via Hound Dog Happenings. The next All Pro Dads is April 24.

Kenrose Elementary

At Saturday’s Brentwood Arbor Day celebration, Kenrose students won four of the five elementary Arbor Day poster contest awards. Congratulations to Riya Koranne (1st), Elizabeth Doetzer (2nd) and Shreya Hemanth (3rd).

Nolensville Elementary

Nolensville held its annual Daddy Daughter Dance on Friday, March 27. The PTO sponsored the event. Bryan Snyder Entertainment donated DJ services and Tara O’Neal served as the photographer, also donating her services. Mama’s Java made some delicious treats. The Sweet Spot set up a fantastic candy bar. Members of the committee included: Katie Estok, Karen Stephens, Crissy Rowley, and Toshi Handa. Teachers helped with set up, serving and clean up. Second grade teachers Ronda Stroud and Lauren Singer made a quick trip to Goodwill and picked up some fantastic evening gowns just for the occasion. It was a memorable evening.

Scales Elementary

Fun was had by all at the first Scales Father/Daughter Dance which was held March 30.

Walnut Grove Elementary

WGES-TV is Walnut Grove Elementary student-run closed circuit television station. The studio broadcasts the “Good Morning, Walnut Grove” program to our student body every day. A crew of five, motivated and enthusiastic, fifth grade students staff the studio in one week increments. Each student has the opportunity to be the producer, camera person, power point person and an anchor, who delivers the broadcast during the week. This hands-on experience of running the broadcast studio and delivering the morning announcements sets the tone for each school day, builds morale among students and peers and develops a true sense of school community.

Winstead Elementary

Winstead students are skating this week in Coach Whipple and Coach McTee PE classes. The Winstead Kids Care Club is sponsoring a Coupons to Troops mailing this spring! American military families stationed overseas are able to use coupons at their base commissary up to six months after their date of expiration. Coupons to Troops pairs these soldiers and their families with those back home willing to mail expired coupons directly to overseas bases.

Middle Schools

Brentwood Middle

Attack on Ft. Sumter! Ms. Dalton’s classes “hosted” a panel of U.S. leaders to discuss the recent attack on Ft. Sumter and the secession of the Southern states. The leaders represented included: Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, John C Calhoun, Henry Clay, Clement Vallandigham, Anna Ella Carroll, Horace Greeley and Frederick Douglass. To prepare, students were all assigned a historical figure. One student had to research the background and political views of the figure and others had to ask the historical figure a question about their stance on the secession of the southern states or the recent attacks on Ft. Sumter and then do research and answer as if they were that person.

Grassland Middle

Once again, the related arts faculty at Grassland Middle School have encouraged a high level of learning through a creative curriculum. Students in Madame Lange’s French I Honors classes participated in a “fashion” show at the end of their unit about clothing. Students dressed up and took turns describing the outfits while walking the red carpet.

Heritage Middle

Two of our HMS alumni came back this week to talk to any and all of our 8th grade students that are interested in attending Renaissance High School. It was great to see them and to hear about all the wonderful and exciting opportunities available at Renaissance. Last Thursday, our STARS Leadership Team and their mentors put together an interactive display for “Kick Butts” Day to help make our student body more aware of the dangers of tobacco, cigarettes and e-cigs. The Leadership Team also spoke during all lunches to highlight the effects of tobacco on the human body and they had the Williamson County Health come out and talk with all the 7th grade Physical Education classes as well. What a great wealth of information to help keep HMS tobacco free!

Sunset Middle

As part of our biodiversity and change unit, students in 8th grade science are studying domains and kingdoms of organisms. To organize this information, they have created a six kingdom brochure. The brochure includes creating a flag for each of the three domains (archaea , bacteria and eukarya) with distinguishing characteristics and creating a motto based on common characteristics for each kingdom that is translated into Latin for a more scientific sound.

Woodland Middle

Daniel Pert participated in the Tennessee State Geography Bee Friday, March 27 against some of the top students in the state. This marks the third year in a row that a Woodland student has qualified for the State Geography Bee. Woodland is very proud of him and all of our talented students who participated this year. Page High

On behalf of the Tennessee Bandmasters Association and MTSBOA, Congratulations to Carley Fell, a senior from Fred J Page High School, for being selected as one of six musicians from the state who will be playing her French Horn at the state soloist performance recital at this year’s TMEA, (Tennessee Music Educators Association), conference in Memphis on Wednesday, April 8. Ravenwood High

RHS Senior Jenna Nam was selected as one of two delegates for TN to attend the National Youth Science Camp. The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) is a residential science education program that honors and challenges two graduating high school science students from each state. Scientists from across the nation present lectures and hands-on science seminars and linger to interact informally with student delegates. Delegates are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art, and music with resident staff members. Opportunities are provided for delegates to present seminars covering their own areas of interest and research. A visit to Washington D.C. permits delegates to visit some of the nation’s premier scientific, governmental, and cultural facilities. The NYSC experience includes overnight excursions into the Monongahela National Forest featuring backpacking, rock-climbing, caving, mountain biking, and kayaking opportunities. Delegates are required to participate in the camp program for its entirety as the fast-paced activities and remote location make travel to and from the NYSC very difficult. More information is available online at www.nysc.org.
