Response to Instruction and Intervention – Part II

Published October 24, 2014

Universal Screening

Under the RTI2 model, districts are required to screen all students in order to determine which students will benefit from additional instruction provided through interventions. WCS uses the STAR Enterprise assessment for reading and math screening. STAR Enterprise received the highest marks from the Center on Response to Intervention, an independent organization that reviews universal screening tools.

Students in grades K-8 are administered the computer-based assessment three times a year. Some high schools have decided to screen students though it is not yet required. The assessment is brief and provides teachers and school leaders with information regarding students’ instructional needs. Instruction and intervention is then tailored to individual students to ensure they are successful with grade level standards. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school for an explanation of STAR results.

Student Support

Students who are not demonstrating the necessary skills to achieve grade level standards are provided additional instruction and intervention in the area of deficit. Students can receive an additional 30 to 60 minutes of instruction and intervention daily based on their level of need. The instruction and intervention is research-based meaning it has a proven record of having a positive effect on student achievement. The interventions are monitored for the quality and frequency of implementation. Under the RTI2 model struggling students receive the support they need in a timely manner.
