Page High Gets First Hand Look at Sports Marketing

Students in Page High’s advanced marketing classes got to learn from the pros during a recent trip to LP Field. The students traveled to Nashville to participate in the Tennessee Titans Learning Lab.
The learning lab is a sports marketing workshop for high school marketing and business students from Middle Tennessee.
“Sports marketing comes up a lot in our advanced marketing classes, and I felt this would really enhance the student’s classroom experience,” said Page High marketing teacher Jackie Stevens. “I wanted them to see what it was like behind the scenes and what it takes to run an organization like the Titans. I also wanted them to learn about the jobs available and what steps they needed to take to break into this highly competitive industry.”
This is the third year the Titans have held this learning lab but the first time students from Page High have attended the event.
“We got to see the behind the scenes work that people don’t see every day,” said Page High student Jacob Wilson. “It gave me an understanding of the Titans as a business as well as a pro team.”
Fellow student Dalton Fulmer agreed.
“There is a lot more to the Titans organization than just the people on the field,” said Dalton. “I was surprised by how far they have to plan in advance and how many details were involved in coordinating their travel. Overall, I really enjoyed it.”
The 35 students from Page High rotated through seven speakers. Some of the topics that were covered included sports media marketing, sponsorships, public relations, field management, transportation management and equipment management. Each speaker also emphasized what it takes to break into their particular area of sports marketing.
“I think the most important take away for all of us is that you must be willing to start at the bottom and then work extremely hard to develop the skills and work ethic that will get you noticed,” said Stevens. “Nearly all of the presenters started out collecting balls, cleaning equipment, selling tickets and pitching tents. It was also important for students to learn that you cannot underestimate the importance and significance of internships. They need to start to set themselves apart by purposefully seeking ways to add value to themselves. Having a great attitude, excellent work ethic and a willingness to go above and beyond does just that.”
