Middle and High Schoolers Participate in Model UN

Middle and high schoolers from across WCS recently participated in the Model United Nations conference, hosted by the YMCA Center for Civic Engagement. Middle schoolers competed November 17, and the high schoolers competed November 21-23. Both competitions took place at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. Information below was provided by each school.

Brentwood Middle

Brentwood Middle School made a strong showing at the conference with 55 students.

Fairview Middle

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: Nina Regala, Sara Solan, Shali Rader and Patton Mebel
  • Japan: Graham Jess, Preston Garner and Cullen Wood – Resolution was passed.
  • Central African Republic: Garrett Walker, Theo Minetos and Colby Jennings – Resolution was passed.

  • Nicole Zeller and Leilani DeRuvo were a lawyer team representing either Romania or Ukraine in a border dispute for the International Court of Justice.
  • The remaining participants were part of the General Assembly.

Summit High School sent 13 students to the Model UN conference.

  • Lawyer team 1: Rielly Bethmann and Caitlyn Mulcahey
  • Lawyer team 2: Eliott Geary and Anthony Kupecz

Rielly Bethmann and Caitlyn Mulcahey presented the case, Indonesia v. Malaysia, to the International Court of Justice. The team advanced through multiple preliminary rounds and scored the highest of of the seven lawyer teams and advanced to the final case. They finished second overall.
