Happy 20th Birthday, Woodland Middle!

Published September 12, 2014

You’re Invited: Woodland Middle turns 20 this year, and to celebrate, the school is holding an event for former and current teachers and students, families and the community at-large. The event is on Saturday, September 13 from 1-5 p.m.

“This event is a celebration of our students’ positive life choices and their successes in school, the workplace, family and community,” Principal Prisilla Fizer, who is Woodland’s original principal, said. “We all look forward to remembering and reminiscing about an important institution in life and how it has impacted all of us in so many ways.”

To kick things off, current members of the eighth grade band will take the stage at the brand new auditorium and provide tunes for the ear to enjoy.

“This is a great opportunity for the school and the community to ‘break-in’ the new state-of-the-art auditorium and to show what a wonderful and rich history both the school and the fine arts department has,” said Band Director Jay McCulley. “I look forward to seeing students that I have taught over the past 18 years, and I think it will be exciting for everyone to see the music these students have been able to prepare in just three short weeks.”

After the band, former and current members of the choir will take the stage to offer a performance you won’t want to miss. Chorus members, past and present, are invited to perform at 2:30 p.m.

“The chorus members, past and present, are invited to perform at the scheduled 2:30 p.m. performance,” said Choir Director Margie Wineman-Chaney. “I’ve always thought of these students as ‘my kids’ and I cannot wait to see all my former students. Music has touched their lives in a deep and inspirational way – I think I’m about to experience one of the greatest days of my life.”

The orchestra will wrap up the day’s festivities.

“Woodland has very loyal alumni as well as current students, which I believe is a testimonial to the great educational opportunities that are provided to the community on a daily basis,” said Orchestra Teacher Allison Cowan. “The orchestra is a fairly new addition to Woodland, but the students are excited to be a part of the big celebration. This will be the first time that the orchestra gets to perform on stage in the new auditorium and the students can’t wait.”

Banners and pictures will also be hung in the gym for people to view and reminisce about their time at Woodland Middle.

“As Woodland celebrates its 20th year, I am thinking about how lucky I am to work here,” said Drama Teacher Margaret Hall. “We have an outstanding administration, and our faculty and staff truly care about and respect one another. I’m looking forward to the celebration, especially the fine arts performances taking place in our new theatre. There will be a touch of the old and the new, and some surprises too. No one should miss this wonderful celebration.”

Though a lot has changed in the past 20 years around Woodland Middle, Principal Fizer is thankful for the 20 years and is looking forward to the future.

“Woodland will continue to move forward to provide a quality education and life experience for our young students,” said Fizer. “While nothing can be perfect, we will continue to provide stability and nurturing to allow students to learn and grow through the challenges of adolescence.”

Woodland Middle School is located at 1500 Volunteer Pkwy, Brentwood, TN 37027. Parking is located at the front of the building.
