Gov. Haslam Announces Review of Academic Standards

Published October 24, 2014

Governor Haslam has announced the process for a public review of Tennessee’s K-12 academic standards in English language arts and math.

Typically, academic standards in Tennessee are reviewed every six years. With current standards now in their fourth year, and with discussions happening across the state, including in WCS, about Common Core state standards, Haslam believes now is the appropriate time for the State Board of Education to take a fresh look, gather feedback and seek recommendations for improvement.

In the coming weeks, a website will be available to all Tennesseans to go online, review each current state standard and comment on what that person likes, doesn’t like or would suggest should be changed about that particular standard. WCS will keep parents informed as to that URL.

This feedback will be collected by a third party, the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Once the online feedback process is completed in the spring of 2015, SREB will collect the information and provide it to the standards review committees and advisory teams, which will review, study and analyze the feedback and standards over the summer and fall of 2015 and provide recommendations to the State Board of Education.
