Dozens Answer Call to Become Substitute Teachers

Published November 20, 2014

The Professional Development Room of Williamson County Schools was filled to its maximum capacity November 17 for WCS Substitute Orientation Training.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Rebecca Owens, the turnout for the event was unexpected, but very welcomed.

“We had 146 people show up for sub training and had to turn some away when the room was at full capacity,” said Owens. “We were pleasantly surprised to have such a fantastic turnout. We have to credit the Communications Department and all of the schools that helped us get the word out about the orientation. We are optimistic that this will allow us to eliminate or greatly reduce our unfilled absences across the district.”

While Owens was excited to see so many people attend the orientation, she encourages anyone interested in becoming a substitute teacher to begin the process. Information can be found online at https://old.wcs.edu/careers/subtitute-teaching/.

Dr. Looney addressed the crowd, stating the importance of substitute teachers in the classrooms.

“Thank you so much for stepping up and being a substitute teacher,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. “We need you; I’m thankful for you; and I look forward to seeing you in our schools.”

You can still apply online to be a substitute teacher. Visit https://selfservice.wcs.edu/Apply/employmentopportunities/default.aspx to view vacancies. Prior to applying, candidates will need to determine if they are required to take the STEDI Course. See more information about that on the WCS substitute teaching webpage.

There will be another open call orientation in early 2015. Keep your eyes on the substitute teaching webpage and InFocus for more information.
