DO NOT Pass a Stopped School Bus

Published October 24, 2014

In congruence with National Bus Driver Appreciation Week, this week, October 20-24, is also National School Bus Safety Week.

This year’s safety theme is #atmystopustop. It was created to elevate discussion about the dangers of cars illegally passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing.

According to the National Association of Pupil Transportation Dispatch (NAPT), motorists should, but often don’t seem to know, that when they encounter a stopped school bus with lights flashing, they must come to a full and complete stop to allow students to cross the street safely. Passing a stopped school bus with its lights flashing is illegal in all 50 states and can carry a significant fine. NAPT encourages parents to talk to their students/children during this year’s National School Bus Safety Week about being safe pedestrians at and around the school bus stop.
