Brentwood High School Senior Lisa Qu has been awarded the prestigious National Silver Key Award by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her sculptural headdress, Pride.

“Receiving a National Silver Key is such a huge honor,” said Lisa. “I’ve never received an award of this prestige, so I’m very grateful for all the people in my life who have inspired me to pursue art, including my art teachers and parents.”

Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program symbolizing excellence and recognizing accomplishments of students in grades 7-12.

Lisa created the Pride sculptural headdress while attending the Governor’s School for the Arts last summer.

“I enrolled in the sculpture class and learned completely new skills like welding and metalworking,” said Lisa. “The prompt behind the project was to create a wearable piece of art that expresses an emotion. I took inspiration from wildlife and African tribes to embody “pride” and created a headdress using elements from animals and tribal culture.”

Lisa plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis in the fall where she will continue her passion for art.
