Joshua Hughes is an associate partner at Tuck-Hinton Architects in Nashville. While there, he has worked on a variety of projects including the Music City Center and Southern Steak and Oyster. Joshua grew up in Williamson County and attended Lipscomb Elementary, Brentwood Middle, Woodland Middle and Brentwood High schools.

What led you to want to be an architect?

I thought that what I considered my strengths aligned well with the needs of the profession. In high school I enjoyed both the technical aspects of math courses along with the creative aspects of art electives.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The creative process of design combined with observing the construction of a design. The privilege of being able to impact the built environment and hopefully positively contribute to the community. There are very few jobs that provide the ability to design a product that is as permanent and tangible, and its use so observable.

What did you enjoy most about your high school experience?

Friendships and personal growth/learning. Much like college, the environment is ripe for both but the pressures and responsibilities are much less.

What WCS teacher made a difference in your life and how?

Jerry Stelmaszak and Mrs. Sarah Bayrd were the two best teachers I had in high school. They both challenged me constantly, but in a way that motivated me to try my hardest. I think both contributed greatly in creating in me an overwhelming desire to continue learning whatever I can.

Do you have any advice for current WCS students?

Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and try new things. There is never a better time to learn from your mistakes.
