Alumni Achievers – Dale Burdick, Summit High Class of 2014
Published February 26, 2015
Dale Burdick is a professional baseball player. After graduating from Summit High in 2014, Burdick was drafted by the New York Mets. He currently plays for the Mets’ Gulf Coast League (GCL) minor league affiliate in Florida and will begin Spring Training March 11.
What was your first year like as a member of the Mets Gulf Coast Rookie League Team?
My first year with the GCL Mets was a fun, learning experience. I learned a lot on the field and also off the field being on my own. The atmosphere is a lot different compared to high school, but I enjoyed every second that I was down there. In addition, I’ll never forget my first Major League hit and home run.
What positions do you play?
I was a shortstop coming out of high school, but last year I played mainly second and third, along with a little bit of short stop. I also played left field and first base because of a shortage of players at those positions.
What do enjoy the most about your job?
I have wanted to be a Major League Baseball player since I was four years old. What I enjoy the most about my job is that I am a step closer to my dream goal that I have worked so hard for. Also, I’m being paid for doing something I love and enjoy.
What did you enjoy most about your high school experience?
I really loved the faculty at Summit- all the way from Dr. Farmer to the janitors. We were a young and new school, which turned out pretty neat because you rarely see one class be seniors for three years.
What WCS teacher made a difference in your life and how?
I would have to go all the way back to eighth grade in Mrs. Cunningham’s Communications class because she gave me the confidence to speak in front of people. I still am a quiet kid, but the way my life is now and how my job can be, I feel a lot more comfortable speaking to a crowd of people, whether if it’s an interview or just small talk.
Do you have any advice for current WCS students?
My advice to WCS students is to be smart, in and out of school, and when you are in school, to just do your work but also enjoy your time with friends. Take the classes that are offered that will benefit you in the future for what your profession might be. And don’t be afraid to ask questions.
