What led you to want to pursue a career in commercial construction?
My dad is a mechanical engineer so I grew up being interested in the engineering field and he encouraged me to try the drafting courses taught by Mr. Sawyer when I started at Centennial. Through Mr. Sawyer’s class, I had the opportunity to become involved in the ACE Mentorship Program. It was there that I was able to meet people from the construction industry and get a taste of what their day-to-day lives were like. I enjoyed it so much that I determined construction management was what I wanted to pursue.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the fast paced, always changing environment of a construction site. As with any job, there is so much more behind the scenes work that most people don’t realize, but that is especially true when it comes to constructing a building. I also cherish the relationships that are formed between contractors, owners, and architects as we are all working towards the same end goal. It is exciting to see how teamwork and problem solving can quickly turn an empty lot, into a brand new building for others to enjoy. There is just something so special about being able to drive by and see a new building on the side of the road that wouldn’t be there if you hadn’t of poured your heart and soul into it.
What did you enjoy most about your high school experience?
I was able to be a part of several clubs that left a lasting impact and helped shape my future. I participated in business clubs such as DECA, community building clubs such as Habitat for Humanity, and technical clubs such as Skills USA and ACE. My involvement allowed me to travel all over the country and compete. I built strong relationships with so many people while also learning and having fun.
What WCS teacher made a difference in your life and how?
My drafting teacher Mr. Tim Sawyer. He was key in helping me discover my talents and love for construction. Taking his drafting classes for four years was one of the best decisions I ever made. Mr. Sawyer is an incredible mentor who encourages everyone to always do their best. He teaches life lessons while also teaching drafting. He truly cares that each of his students sees success and does everything he can to help make that happen. I contribute a large part of my success today to his guidance and support.
