Across the Board – September 15, 2014

Six new members of the Williamson County Board of Education were sworn in by County Mayor Rogers Anderson at the regular meeting of the Board September 15. Dan Cash, Paul Bartholomew, Jay Galbreath, Candy Emerson, Dr. Beth Burgos and Susan Curlee will serve four year terms.

The Board selected a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman at the meeting. Mark Gregory will serve as Chairman, and PJ Mezera will serve at Vice-Chairman for the next year.

Students, staff members and schools were honored during the meeting. Nolensville student Stanley Barnes won first place for the State of Tennessee in the Daughters of the American Revolution Junior American Citizen Contest for an original historical fiction story entitled My Day with Ben Franklin. Franklin High’s Tia Hyatt received the “Legion of Valor Bronze Cross” through the JROTC program. Her instructor is Foster Montgomery. Brentwood High’s Rebekah Ninan was elected Governor of Girls State and attended Girls Nation. Her teacher is Harriet Medlin.

In Staff Spotlights, Kenrose Elementary Teacher Amy Kate McMurry was named a member of the inaugural cohort of the SCORE Tennessee Educator Fellowship.

In School Spotlights, 27 schools were honored for being named Reward Schools. Schools honored for performance include Allendale Elementary, College Grove Elementary, Grassland Elementary, Heritage Elementary, Hunters Bend Elementary, Kenrose Elementary, Pearre Creek Elementary, Nolensville Elementary, Oak View Elementary, Scales Elementary, Sunset Elementary, Trinity Elementary, Winstead Elementary, Grassland Middle, Heritage Middle, Page Middle, Sunset Middle, Woodland Middle and Middle College High. Longview Elementary was honored for Progress. Schools honored for Performance and Progress include Clovercroft Elementary, Walnut Grove Elementary, Hillsboro School, Spring Station Middle, Page High and Ravenwood High.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Looney congratulated Mark Gregory for being named Board Chairman.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved a 2014-15 Cafeteria Fund amendment for $12,500 from a State grant received by the department.
  • Approved one 2014-15 Budget resolution for $150,079 to pay for three part time assistant principals for Nolensville Elementary, Ravenwood High and Fairview Middle from fund balance.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved the Calendar Committee membership for 2015-16 to include Charles Farmer, Laurette Carle, Kevin Deck, Willie Dickerson, Denise Goodwin and Kari Miller.
  • Approved the Fundamentals of Education course per the Tennessee Department of Education’s recommendation. The course is part of the Early Childhood Education Career Cluster.
  • Approved the 2014-15 Extended Contract Program Proposal.
  • Approved the 2014-15 management personnel for collaborative conferencing.
  • Approved a temporary pay rate for SACC due to a lack of employees. The pay rate will cease at the end of September.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, October 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex. The Board will meet in Special Session on Monday, October 6 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex. That meeting is to discuss Common Core.
