Three schools were recognized for being named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School during the October 20, 2014, meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education. Hillsboro School, Kenrose Elementary and Trinity Elementary will be officially honored in November during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Edmondson Elementary’s Gitanjali Rao was honored for The Tennessee Association for the Gifted Nicholas Green Award. Her teacher is Jennifer Holt.
In the area of the arts, several students were recognized for being named to the All State Choir. Brentwood High students include Anna Kaye Schulte, Jordan Breece and Andrew Fischer. Their teacher is Natalie Pratt. Centennial students are Addie Pollard, Jake Cannon, and Cassie Trabucco. Their teacher is Jeff Myrick. Franklin students are Kaitlin Logan, Ashley Nite and Elizabeth Schenck. Their teacher is Cynthia Fehrman. Independence students are Drake Cunningham, Kenzie Barnett, Andrew Maguire. Their teacher is Mary Lee Atenhan. Ravenwood students are Jenna Nam and Sarah Yang. Their teacher is Lauren Ramey. Summit students are Scott Brooks, Kayla Hack, Cassie Henriksen, Celina James, Nicole Turner and Kristina Wall. Their teacher is Jenna Elsberry.
Two students have been invited to participate in the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Centennial High’s Chase Miller was named to the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. His band director is Scott Miller. Ravenwood High’s Van Jefferson was named to the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl Football Team. His coach is Will Hester.
Ravenwood High’s Ellie Marquardt was named to the 2014-2015 Tennessee Cheerleading Coaches Association All-State Cheerleading Squad. Stephanie Dykes is her coach.
In Staff Spotlights, Crockett Elementary teacher Crystal Jahnig was given the Tennessee Artsonia Leadership Award. Franklin High Soccer Coach Mike Burgoyne was recognized as the 2013-14 State of Tennessee Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.
In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Looney shared Let’s Talk School dates and times with the group. The meetings will be held from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28 at Centennial High and Thursday, October 30 at Fairview High.
In the Board Chairman’s Report, PJ Mezera told the Board that future work sessions will be held in the professional development room of the district at 1761 West Main Street, Franklin. They will continue to be livestreamed by the district.
In New Business, the Board:
- Approved two policies on first reading including Board Meeting Agendas and Textbook Selection and Adoption. Board policies must be approved on two readings.
- Approved one 2014-15 Budget resolution for $375,000 from the Central Cafeteria Fund for cafeteria improvements at Bethesda, Crockett and Trinity elementary schools, Page Middle and Page High.
- Approved a Resolution Regarding Common Core State Standards in Support of Local Control of Education. https://old.wcs.edu/wp-content/pdf/School/SchoolBoard/sb_1020_2014.pdf
- Approved a modification for bus driver compensation. A $500 finder’s fee for employees is part of the incentive as long as the driver works through the school year. The fee will be paid at the end of the school year.
- Approved tenure recommendations.
Adopted a Code of Ethics.
In other business, the Board:
- Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
- Approved the deletion of three policies on second reading including Equipment and Supplies Records, Transportation Records and Demonstrations and Strikes.
- Approved a budget timeline for 2015-16.
- Approved the McKinney-Vento Act, Education of Homeless Children and Youth Grant Program.
- Approved an electronic sign for Independence High.
- Approved a construction change order for Nolensville High.
The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, November 17 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
