Across the Board – July 20, 2015

The Williamson County Board of Education offered Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney a contract extension and a raise and retention bonus during its regular meeting July 20, 2015. The extension offer goes through June of 2019. The raise is a minimum of five percent per year, and the retention bonus of $30,000 would be paid to Dr. Looney in July 2016 and added to his base salary. Dr. Looney is also a finalist for Metro Nashville Public Schools superintendent and should make a decision by Friday.

The Board celebrated students and staff during the meeting. Centennial student Cassie Trabucco was honored for being named to the National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Choir. Her choir director is Jeff Myrick.

In staff spotlights, Brentwood High’s Ronnie Adcock was honored for being named the 2015 Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts Teacher of the Year.

Three teachers were awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching including Doug Anderson, Brentwood High; Kara Clark, Hillsboro; and Tracey Harmon, Franklin High.

The WCS Communications Department was awarded three Golden Achievement Awards from the National School Public Relations Association. The group was honored for the Successory Program, the Profile of Excellence and for BE NICE. Department members include Bobby Blevins, Lydia Glynn, Cory Mason, Kersta Mello, Connie McVicker and Carol Birdsong.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney celebrated the district’s increase in Advanced Placement course offerings and increased test scores.

Board Chairman PJ Mezera invited everyone to attend the district’s Infothon on Saturday, July 25 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the CoolSprings Galleria.

In Unfinished Business, the Board:

  • Approved the Superintendent’s Evaluation Instrument.
  • Approved funding for a theatre at Fairview High.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved two policies on first reading including Cleaning Program and Repairs & Alterations.
  • Approved a 2014-15 Intra-Category Budget Transfer for end of year adjustments.
  • Approved a settlement for Sturgeon v. WCBOE. Details of the settlement should be provided to the district later this week.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approval six Board Policy revisions on second reading including Heating and Lighting, Semester and Final Examinations, Sick Leave – Educators, Sick Bank – Educators, Sick Leave – Classified and Sick Bank – Classified.
  • Approved 2015-2016 athletic supplements.
  • Approved the Title X, McKinney-Vento Grant.
  • Approved the Fairview High School LED advertising board installation.
  • Approved a Longview Elementary School walking track.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, August 17beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
