National award winners from Fairview High were the first to be celebrated with Student Spotlights during the regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education December 15, 2014. Rachael Winesberry won first place for Employment Interviewing, and Katie Conlan won first place for Consumer Math at the Jobs for American Graduates Conference. Their teacher is Vickie Parsons. Conlan also won first place in the Spelling Division of the Tennessee BETA Club while Logan Johnson won first place in the Science Division. Their teacher is Will Penner.
Fairview High’s Chandler Hollingsworth was inducted into the Torch and Laurel Society and received the Award of Excellence at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Her teacher is Christy Brumit.
In the arts, the Ravenwood High School Choir was selected to perform at the Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Their choral director is Lauren Ramey.
Several students were honored for athletic accomplishments. Hillsboro’s Lauren McReynolds and Camryn Felt made the Middle School All American Cheerleader Team. Their coach is Julia Hancock.
Ravenwood cheerleaders won the 2014 TSSAA State Championship in the Competition Cheerleaders category. Team members are Rylie Armstrong, Kaylen Lanius, Becca Zaves, Kylie Betchley, Olivia Blair, Sarah Klippenstein, Aerial Griffin, Sydney Fordice, Logan Jordan, Lauren Martin, Greta Peterson, Frankie Palmer, Mekenna Raymer, Brooke Phillips, Clair Sorenson and Morgan Lanius. Their coach is Stephanie Dykes.
Several students were honored for being selected to participate in the East/West Tennessee All-Star football game. All were on the West team which won the game. Centennial’s Kali Hicks and Ravenwood’s Ellie Marquardt were honored for being named cheerleaders for the West. Hicks’ coach is Chasity Carter, and Marquardt’s is Dykes. Centennial’s running back Deon Sanders played for the West Team. His coach is Brian Rector. Franklin kicker Corey Fatony was also named. His coach is Donnie Webb. Ravenwood wide receiver Austin Percy was also named to the team. His coach is Will Hester. Fairview High Coach Chris Hughes served as one of the coaches for the West Team.
Board Secretary and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Costa Morgan was recognized by Board Chairman PJ Mezera and Deputy Superintendent Jason Golden. Morgan will retire at the end of month after 22 years of service with the district, the past five working with Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. A reception in her honor will be held Wednesday, December 17 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Carolyn Campbell Room at the Central Office.
In the Board Chairman’s Report, Mezera wished all a new year filled with joy and peace.
In New Business, the Board:
Approved an Intra-category Budget Amendment for $1,214,317 for an eight classroom addition at College Grove Elementary.
Did not approve a request to authorize spending up to $15,000 to hire a lobbyist for the upcoming legislative session.
Approved changes to the Board Handbook.
Approved the Textbook Committee.
In other business, the Board:
Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
